You mean living in your mothers basement, spending your days gambling in crypto? Yeah, you can definitely achieve that level of success with an English degree.

Well I meant retiring early at 40

yes, but you'll need to get job training outside of school. Take on an internship in a white-collar field that values writing, like HR, PR, sales, or advertising. Or just be a teacher, that's a failsafe option.

Get a STEM degree and retire by 35 unless you want to become a middle aged tranny ranting about how rigged the system is. Your compensation is determined by what you can offer.

No unless you graduate from Ivy or Oxbridge. It seems many Ivy and Oxbridge graduates with useless degrees like English tend to land well paying jobs, possibly due to the connections they have made.

Nope! You can’t! You’ll be working at Walmart. That is an entirely over saturated degree with not a single job related to that field. Teaching will require many more years of training and certification, even then the opportunity for English teaching is just not there. There will be hundreds of applicants for a full-time substitute job at a low-income school in the middle of nowhere.

Please do not do that. Get a useful degree or certification to maximize your income. Don’t devote your life to the pursuit of money, but don’t underestimate its value. Once you have money you have the freedom to pursue whatever goals you want, don’t be impatient and screw up your chances

I wouldn't say that's true. Apply for a few publishing internships and try to twist whatever experience you have to fit the role (by highlighting communication/sales/management/graphic design/or social media skills), many major publishers and even indie presses have good internship programs though if you have no real work experience you might want to try for the unpaid ones. Or you can just start writing freelance articles or "content" right now, it only takes a few emails to editors to get an offer. Cheer up, anon!

anon, this isn't true at all, especially for Americans. We've had a net shortage of teachers for many years, even in big states like California and Texas. And certification might require a 1-2 year Masters, but you can just get the alternative certification or do Teach 4 America.

Most people (i'm talking upwards of 65% last time i checked) don't even end up in the field they study. A college degree has just become a way to prove your responsible and a thinking person. Getting an English degree will make you a better reader, writer, and critical thinker. If you think that you are capable of marketing yourself with these skills then yes do it. If you're like the other 90% of college shills who don't take their education seriously and only want a grade from miss teacher than it doesn't matter what you major in anyways

This is the only real answer. You should have been planning for this moment while you were getting your degree by getting published and building a network. But like this anon suggests you can still publish now as long as you have interesting ideas.

Sorry but I dont want to be published myself, I want to work in publishing. Why do I have to write gay poems and blogposts when the job is proofreading editing and planning I'm not even that fussed about going into publishing but I fell for the meme of doing what you love and chose a shit degree with limited career paths. I have no idea what I am doing and it is literally making me suicidal

>> No.18700981

>>18700529
If you’re not that interested in publishing, just pick literally any of the other career paths available to an English major. Don’t believe the underage idiots in this thread, there are plenty of careers for you. Social media management for a startup, personal assistant, public relations, HR, non-profit work, copywriting, or even publishing ... anything that involves clear communication. Start small by getting the minimal requirements for that job, and work from there. Look for small internships to start with at a local paper/magazine/radio station/museum/printing press/poetry mag, you can even volunteer to read the submission pile at some places. It’s not a meme to do what you love, I’m very happy with my post-English major career.
