Basically this all started with a joke comic on /b/ back in like 2006. After putting in 0 effort I wasn't able to locate the comic, but it goes like: average guy asks a girl out in a super-respectful way, she declines because she wants to be single, the alpha male slides into frame ("ARE THOSE SIX PACK ABS WHY YES THEY ARE") and she wanders off with him in a sexual daze. This was back when terms like "friendzone" and "nice guy" were still taken at 100% face value and would get you nothing but sympathy if you mentioned them on the web.

The concept of an "alpha male" goes back way further but no one was trying to figure out if they were one or not, we all just sort of assumed the alphas wouldn't be wondering if they were or not. But for a lot of us, this comic got us wondering if we were the alpha or not, especially because myspace just got big and jocks were using the internet for COD cheat codes, and even the queasiest-looking nerd had probably had at least one boycrazy fat chick go insane for him at least once, so we could no longer just say "If I was alpha I wouldn't be on the internet right now" we had to actually stop and think. At some point we had to admit that we weren't, and if we weren't alpha then what were we? This resulted in the alpha-beta split, whereas alpha=confident+attractive and beta was whatever else. But that dichotomy wasn't really adequate to explain the complicated intermale comparisons of the actual real world. Surely Christian Bale would be an alpha in every environment he enters, but what about Steve Buscemi? He looks goofy but he's famous so he could've probably snatched your girl in his prime. But what if he wasn't famous? Would he still be confident?

And if a beta is some guy who has to take a girl out on dates and prove his value beyond primal masculinity if he wants to get laid, what do you call the guys who can't even hit that level? More layers were created. You have gamma for sexless worker drone, delta for niche-hobby enthusiast, shit like that.

So enter sigma. Those of us who were grew up with shit understand what it was: just some guys blowing off steam and blaming our lack of success on some other dude's genetic gifts, nothing to do with us or being timid or aiming above our leagues. But as more young people began to join the internet and hoping to find some premade identity-role to step into, they began compiling rigid lists of "alpha" traits and behaviors which could emulated to ensure personal success. Some are good, some are bad, but almost all of them require a decent level of self-esteem and confidence to actualize. There's no formula for confidence, but that's a different conversation. But anyway, shit got really weird and dark around this time. Blackpill, looksrealism or whatever, yeah, you can argue about the truth of it but there's no denying you probably felt more confident about yourself before you heard of them.
