Mishima thread. Currently on part 2 of The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea

>> No.18664044

i enjoyed that book although it for some reason seems like a novel someone would write earlier in their career.

I've heard people both criticize and praise his depiction of children for realism. What do you think anons? were you part of some samurai philosophy death cult as a kid? would you have been interested in something similar?

STOP, FAGGOT. WE'VE HAD TOO MANY MISHIMA THREADS. FIND A THIRD AUTHOR TO POST ABOUT, MISHIMA AND SNEEDTZSCHE ARE MID ANYWAYS. NOT BAD YOU KNOW, JUST MID.

Why isn't Mishima in Bungo Stray Dogs? Is he too recent? Does his estate own the rights to his name? Is he not actually popular in Japan?

The children are realistic but also exaggerated in a sense. I've had experiences as a child of thinking of someone as a hero and becoming disappointed about said someone not being the hero I thought him to be, as an adult the roles got reversed, of course; a lot of my little cousins had mad respect and love for me when they were younger but now...

exaggerated in the sense that killing small animals and etc. is not something most kids do, y'know? Sure, there's the occasional one or two but you can't find one in each school/highschool. Hell, I reckon there might even be whole cities without these protopsychos.

Homer
Virgil
Ovid
Dante
Chaucer
Shakespeare
Tolstoy
Balzac
Dostoevsky
Joyce
Dickens
Goethe
Melville
Proust
Cervantes
Milton
Hugo
Flaubert
Tolkien

This is excluding lyric poets and all playwrights except the greatest. And all the writers named are considered to be the titans. Is Mishima better than any of them?

I want to get into Mishima's works
I've only managed to find The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, the Rite of Love and Death, Death in Midsummer, and Confessions of a Mask

which of these should I pick up first?

Ive olny read and really liked Confessions of a Mask but maybe it wont hit as well if youre not a repressed sodomite. Its still really well written and my friends liked it so maybe youll like it a lot too.
Try just getting the 4 of them from libgen, read the first ten pages, and see what you like more.

He’s read and celebrated as a great novelist in Japan but still kind of controversial. Had he just been a vehement ultranationalist there would be no controversy. The fact that he actually staged a coup and seppuku in retaliation against the government and military sort of takes him into controversial territory.

I thought the kid characters were a little confusing desu. I was laughing at how seriously they took themselves but I know that Mishima wanted them to represent his hope for a new Japan.

Dickens isnt that good, yes. Dostoevsky goes deeper into better philosophical questions than mishima, and writes more compelling stories. Tolkein - no, my man neess to stop it. Tolkein is influentual, not great.

Mishima's writinf is pretty good, not great except in small spots (the scene where mr mask is fighting the yellow nigga on the swing is heat, the ending of sailor, a few others). He's just a cool perspective to engage with, not a top tier writer.

I made the comparison as a joke obvs, mishima is studied and read widely, he's one of the most popular jap writers in the west. Under rated?

>> No.18669234

>>18669192
Yes, underrated. He receives less interest over here than in Japan, less then other writers from his own era even, and is never in the discussion for best writer, best writer of his century, nothing. They give out a Mishima prize for people who are “innovative” and it’s become a consolation for LGBTQ and feminist novels. He’s not even the most celebrated author from the period while he was alive and I’m asserting he was one of the best, possibly the best, from that century.

>> No.18669490

>>18669234
Stop it. He doesn't deserve such acclaim anywhere. Sailor is super forced and awkward despite a good ending, temple is nothing special whatsoever, mask is an interesting character portrait but the ending sucks and his short stories are hit or miss with more misses than hits.
Maybe the tetralogy is amazing and will redeem him completely in my eyes, but i have to get around to that and kinda doubt it anyways. I hope i'm wrong tho.
He received plenty interest. Pewdiepie called him his fav author and his books have rocketed in sales since the 2000s. Anybody who really knows literature knows him. Nigga stop.
