Gibson basically stole all of his tropes from him, but just put it in a sci-fi setting.

i think snow crash is a tight 200-page story in a 400-page book. there are so many digressions with the "librarian" about mesopotamian alphabets that it felt like reading a wikipedia article at times. i'd recommend reading it, because that half that's good has a unique style and flow to it, but goddam does neal stephenson like to bloviate

As far as books go I liked Gibson's Bridge trilogy more than Neuromancer. Hardware wasn't bad either, can't remember the author.

Those just read like made-for-TV thriller movies with science fiction elements. His ideas are good, I especially liked Idoru, but the storytelling was lame.

i don't know what cyberpunk entails to others, but in my experience it fits into that genre. i think william gibson even wrote an intro to one of the updated versions.

I never see this posted here, so, there it is. Gibson went into airport tier thrillers after Neuromancer, but here, all edginess and Pynchon & Burroughs influence was kept. One of the kind book, find it if you can.

This: 'Dead Girls, the first book in the cycle, lays the groundwork for the rest of the series. The book focuses on Ignatz Kwazh, an angst ridden, obsessive nebbish, and his exotic paramour Primavera. Upon entering puberty, Primavera, like many of her contemporaries, contracted a nanotech virus which transformed her into a white, plastic skinned lifeform, called a "Doll" or "Lilim" (after Adam's first wife Lilith) by a fearful human populace. Males are apparently immune to the virus, but can become carriers through contact with the sexually ravenous Lilim--their saliva carries agents that infect male gametes, insuring that any girl-children will be born dolls.'

what made you like him/this book? i was looking at it but i have a list of books to read and the reviews of Egan books said there was lots of long winded descriptions which were unnecessary but his style, they put me off getting it now.

Oddly enough these infodumps were the most interesting part of the book, everything else was just mindlesss action, entertaining sure, but I wish he explored these themes outside these parts as well
