I was bored earlier, as if often the case, and put all the books I've read this year (57), into the usual tiers, high tier, terrible tier, etc. I was shocked how many were in the bad or terrible tier, maybe 15 or more. I pick my books VERY carefully, with guidance from friends, people here, and my own memory, yet I still read some bad stuff. It's not like I'm losing interest in lit, I still enjoy it a lot. How do I get all this bad stuff?

Maybe the more you read the better able you are to pick out crap novels?

If you've read a lot then generally you have higher expectations of novels than someone who does it a little.

What were some of the "terrible tier" books.

And how are you defining "shit"; a book that you would argue is not well written or well done, or a book that you personally didn't like?

attempting to place meaning on random occurrences

I read tons, and I think I've honed my book finding 'skillz' a bit better, but I still read crap. Why is the universe doing this to me?

lulz

I think that it's down to personal preference, I've been recommended many a novel which I've been told is 'fantastic' etc. but I thought it was unbelievably dull.

Post your picture of books and maybe talk about the ones to miss out and the ones you'd recommend? I'd like that.

Aren't you the 100 books in a year twatwaffle? Yeah, you're bound to run into some shit if you're trying to consume that much in such time.

Done in one. Hell, after reading The Brothers Karamazov, I found Notes From Underground slightly disappointing.

I've read about 80 books this year and there's only been 2 I'd say were bad. I'd love to claim I choose my books carefully but it's really because I enjoy pretty much everything. (:
