Hey /lit/, my friend just read Beyond Good and Evil by Nietzsche, and I think it destroyed him. He's been pretty depressed lately, so can you recommend some "happier" philosophy for him?

Hey man, maybe new age philosophy is considered shit to the general /lit/izen, but I found that book in the mountains by pure luck. I went ahead and read it and I have to say, I've been significantly happier at life since then.

>> No.1864215

none of these are actual works of philosophy, minus camus

if your friend, OP, wants "happier" philosophy, i'd recommend something by richard rorty - really famous guy, very engaging writer, ideas that aren't too hard to digest, and heavily influenced by nietzsche. lots of nietzschean play. contingency, irony, and solidarity is pretty good. also, no metaphysics!

What depressed him exactly?
There's a speech given by Allan Bloom on Youtube about Nietzsche, and he talks about how many times he's had his students come crying into his room about Nietzsche throwing them into a crisis, lololololol.

You could try The Comforts of Philosophy by Alain de Botton, but what an idiotic reaction to Nietzsche and what an idiotic approach to choosing what philosophy to read.

Maybe he should just go to Church instead?

>> No.1864388

Anybody who reads philosophical texts as a sort of self-help guide -- these are the people for whom de Botton writes -- is an impoverished fool who does not understand the true value to be gleaned from philosophical discourse. If you want to just reduce great thinkers to bite-size chunks of comfort food, that's fine, but don't pretend that what you're doing is philosophical. It's not.

I have no idea why Nietzsche would be depressing. He's actually one of the more optimistic thinkers of the late 19th century (and early 20th). If you read him alongside Weber and Freud, you'll find that only in Nietzsche does humanity have the opportunity to escape from its woes by taking a great leap. In Weber, we are trapped by the iron cage of capitalism, no longer able to wear our wealth lightly like a cloak. In Freud, we are doomed to repress our deepest and most offensive thoughts in our subconscious, a necessary process for civilization to work. Only in Nietzsche do we find the possibility of redemption.

Sounds like your friend wasn't really ready for what was in the pages there. That's fine, if he reacted that way to it, then that's just an indicator of how he's been living his life up until this point. But instead of moving on to something else to read, most likely to try and cover up what was just read, he should try to evaluate his response more. It is possible for him to realize why he reacted negatively to it, and then overcome that in himself.
