On Book Two of BakkerQuest, does the story ever move on from whores crying about their feelings? The first book had 10+ intersecting storylines, this one is literally Whores Cry Around the Campfire while Kellhus mindrapes them. The oases of exposition about the Dunyain and Nonmen is barely worth slogging through the rest.

Does it get better?

Should I read BoTNS?
'Pleb' here. I have no great love of literature or even genre fiction, and almost exclusively read non-fiction with the exception of a few fantasy works (Mostly just Tolkien, Conan and ASOIAF) which I force my way through their prose and lenght in spite of my lack of pleasure doing so because I find the stories, characters, worldbuilding, themes and ideas to be entertaining and compelling once I finally dissect and digest them in their entirety. It gives me a sense of wonder that I don't find anywhere else but on these particular books. Although, I still would prefer if they were all just raw scripts and screenplays instead of novels

The premise, aesthetics and world of BoTNS are VERY interesting to me, but I don't want to frustrate myself in an effort that in the end might just be a massive waste of time in my part. So, should I still give it a shot?

Fantasy setting, Humanity is devastated after a war with the goblins where they basically just ended up with a truce. It's not grimdark but they genuinely feel forlorn and on their way out.
Main character is a thief who runs into a noble warrior type and gets roped into her quest to go on a journey to a town that's recently been overrun by giants and do something there. Although he's a thief it's not one of those heist fantasy books, it's just straight up epic fantasy.

Highlight is the worldbuilding stuff, manages to feel like a pretty unique setting whilst using creatures, world and magic setups that have all been used before.
Beyond that I'm just enjoying reading a book where the protagonist actually goes on an epic adventure instead of yet another book about revolution and/or court intrigue.

Any good recommendations for stories that explore gender segregated societies/matriarchies. I've read most of the big ones. (Herland, Gate to Women's Country, Ammonite, etc.) I find the concept interesting but haven't found a story that goes beyond just advocating for political lesbianism and eventual male genocide/eugenics or boring moralizing about how oppression is bad whether men or women are doing it.

Seven Surrenders, Terra Ignota #2 - Ada Palmer (2017)

After having read this I can affirm with all due certainty that the first book is only half of this particular narrative. Anyone who doesn't intend to read the second book probably shouldn't read the first. Whatever you thought of the first book, you'll most likely think the same of this one, though having become more accustomed to its style removed some of the rough edges for me.
As with the first book this is one of the more uneven novels I've ever read with regards to personal enjoyment. For every excitement there was a balancing disappointment. There were hilarious scenes that thoroughly amused me and overly melodramatic scenes that exasperated. In theory this could've been a top series for me, but as it is, it's relegated to being a intriguing emotional experience.
One of the more unclear aspects of these books is whether any of the characters are intended to be cheered on by the reader or if this is meant to be read as a neutral and detached history, in so far as any work of history can be anyway. My reading was more towards the latter, which limits emotional involvement and may severely limit enjoyment for many. This detachment may have been for the better for me, as I don't support the goals of any of the characters.
I want to read about more characters like this in fiction, as I certainly haven't read many of them, outside of a certain context. Major character spoiler: They lifted my penis gingerly and reached past to feel the vaginal folds behind. The specific details of this aren't provided, though that's fine. I appreciated their inclusion all the same.
Possibly as the result of the controversies regarding the first book Palmer is more explicit with her beliefs, as indicated by reader responses, which may be for the better or worse depending on the preferences of the reader. This results in statements such as "The more people insist that feminism has won, the more they blind themselves to its remaining foes." Gender concerns are very much important to her and that shows itself quite clearly in the text. She's very much opposed its elimination as indicated by her responses to readers and statements such as "Suddenly neutered dress and speech were mandatory to proclaim one's allegiance to the 'good guys'" and "So the Great 'They' Silence fell". In this way, it's similar to "I don't see race", though for gender.
There was a scene that would've assured it four stars if it had ended differently, but considering how it went, it became a cause for concern instead. Despite these concerns, I'll be reading the two remaining books. With time, I may appreciate this peculiar concoction more.

just finished this yesterday. pretty disappointing. ive really been itching for some native american sf but the writing in this was very middling, had a couple of good characters but at the same time it felt like i was just reading a YA book with some cusses thrown in. also coulda been half the length. also: towards the end a character said "seven hells" as an exclamatory phrase and like...idk if it was supposed to be a wink towards song of ice and fire?? but i wasnt impressed. i was really hoping for more of a story with native american philosophical underpinnings like animate geographical features and animal populations and gift economy stuff i guess. this was more like an aesthetically central american grrm novella. ah well. i may still check out the sequel when it comes out.

I read that it's to Neuromancer what Gormenghast is to LotR, can anyone expand on that analogy? Not familiar with Gormenghast. Why try and force their politics onto this? Why not just leave it alone? There are plenty of other Fantasy/ Sci Fi series that would be better suited for this "woke" treatment. Really? I only read Involution Ocean but I liked it alot, haven't noticed any cuckery in there

I enjoyed Neuromancer, Count Zero is ok(haven't finished it but I'm close to the end) but desu Marly's storyline is boring and lame. I liked Snow Crash but I try to stick with older/more "classic" cyberpunk-I know that too much of the fandom gets it wrong(haha machine body go brrr) and praises the high tech as opposed to the ramifications and loss of humanity and related themes, not to mention cutting out the low life part of "high tech low life"

I feel like I don't have anything to gauge modern sci fi given the awards and communities love to heap praise on "diverse" writers and literary tokens instead of focusing on quality. Luckily there's plenty of classic work out there to read that's praised for being quality and covers topics that have broad appeal and aren't dated by the time they hit print

I know there's alot of nepotism within many entertainment industries, but why has it gotten this bad? America used to be on top of the world when it came to cultural influence and media, but as of late it's becoming a laughingstock. Both US and UK media are completely subservient to these people, and I don't get why they let it continue despite countless examples of media they've tanked

Manga is outdoing western comics by leaps and bounds, and anime is faring better than western cartoons because the Japanese just want to make enjoyable products. How many more franchises do we need to go broke before this woke shit stops? Or are they just gonna burn it all down?

I'm working on a setting where everything has a corresponding spirit, a bit like a combination of Plato and Shinto, with a hierarchy where each spirit is aligned with at least one of several spirits at the top of the hierarchy, who are essentially the gods of the setting. The thing is, I'm stuck on what aspects of existence should get a spirit at the very top of things, and I don't want to have too many to keep things from getting too complicated. I'm thinking that there'd be at least one that came into being relatively recently, corresponding to mortal thought and emotions as they grew to prominence and new spirits corresponding to them sparked into existence, but besides more abstract things like time, space, gravity, and so on, do you have any ideas on how I can divide things please? For clarity, think of the hierarchy of being more like the relationship between cells and organs within the "body" of existence. Basically, the spirit of say, a leaf on a tree, will be so low down the totem pole in terms of intelligence (so much so that it's dubious that it 'can' think any more than the leaf itself could) and power that any kind of attempt at communication or using it in magic is an epic waste of time and energy. But all the leaves, while separate, are still part of the tree, whose own spirit will have more power and intellect, though most would still not be sapient. Similarly, the tree is a individual living thing, but still part of the forest as a whole, and the spirit of the forest will thus have more power than every tree combined, since it's also composed of the animals, fungi, etc. Similarly, the spirit of a single stone would be below the spirit of a mountain that it rests upon, which is dwarfed by the spirit of the mountain 'chain', and which in turn is only a part of the spirit of the 'continent', and so on. Make sense?

I finished Dogs of War, and I liked it. It was kind of like an 80s movie. It had a bunch of old movie tropes. But you know what? It worked. It kind of unraveled near the end. When the villain "dies" wrapping up the plot, and then the book goes through a series of tiny vignettes that really do little more than world building. Along with a little too on the nose explanation of sci-fi themes.

You know it's a good book when it can make you sympathetic toward a swarm of bees. I'd waifu Bees if I could.

The audio reading was AMAZING. They got the perfect guy to play Rex. He fully committed to that character and it payed all incredibly. The girl they got for some of the chapters was just ok. She's good at her one voice, but doesn't have any range, so her male voices sound really flat.

I already started the Sequel, and there are more old movie tropes in this one too. The author is definitely a boomer, because his character's reference "cable television" and "bad news bears". Like, the time this takes place has to be in the near future. About 30-40 years? Maybe more, since I think the first book took place in the near future as well. So the main character is born into the world where cable TV isn't so relevant anymore, assuming that it's still around 40 years from now. I don't think he would have reached for that reference. But cable TV is still relevant to boomers.

To be fair Kvothe is good at alot of things, but no matter how intelligent he is, he fucks everything up. I wouldn't call him a Gary Stu because he can't seem to get anything right in the long run. I mean he's a weakling inn owner now that can't defend himself against a couple deserter soldiers. The story is about his fall from a pedestal, his Gary Stuish ways is just his climb to the top of the pedestal. What do y'all think ?

Although I will admit it is retarded how every girl melts in front of him. But sometimes I like to think the Kvothe telling the story is embellishing parts. It is something a real person would do.

Rothfuss will definitely finish the book in a few years, will it live up to the hype? Somehow I doubt it.

There's no correlation between rating and quality until it drops below 2.5.

For someone who likes to harp about how problematic and toxic and whatnot other people are, he seems blissfully unaware that Whedon has been disgraced as a sexist hypocrite unperson for years now. Because pic related is how he presents himself on the About section of his official homepage. Better brush up those Photoshop skills. I would go with The Alpha: Protect. Procreate. Prevail. by Eric Vall

It was a bit of a slow start, but it just keeps building, as we follow Jesse through his journey to become the ultimate alpha shifter.

This is one of the most plot driven of Eric Vall's stories I've read in a while, and I can see how much better he's getting at adding depth to his tales, giving more back stories and sub-plots to the side characters like Jesse's aunt and best friend. I just hope he keeps that habit with the other, smaller characters in the story. It adds feelings to the story as a whole, and makes the reader become more invested in the entire story and the characters within it.

I find myself really hyped to see what happens next in this new series, and how the MC interacts with his new, growing family of pack members.

You can't. To live, to be, is to be cucked. It's like Hegel says, the Truth is only whole through the Self the recognizes itself in that which is not Self, but the sublation of Self. This Notion is the basis of Truth. That which is outside is possessed by the Other, and thus the Other possesses and sublates what is yours. Being in time is pure being owned, pure experience of what one owns being owned by another who is other, pure cuckoldry. All dasein in mixed in the forever systematizing expansion of wissencraft, which holds as its aim the absolyt cuckoldry of self. To be is to be cucked.
