It just means everyone is doing so bloody well that they want to experience sheer misery for the sake of change.

it'll be great, we'll be totally different and get into wacky fights and misunderstandings, like some sort of irregular couple or something

You've kind of answered your own question.
The great vision we used to have of the future, of peace, prosperity for all, the triumph of technology - it's all faded. People become cycnical about peace, they see the only system that works for the economy is the one that brings deprivation and inequality, and in general we have become more suspicous about technology and science in general than we were 30 years ago. People become less rational, a rise in the belief in the supernatural and alternative world views increases.

When you see the vision of a grand society failing it has impacts on literature. If you think about Western and particularly American literature, it's all been, for the last 80 years or so, how the American Dream has failed.

Add in current developments with an "outside enemy" to western civilization i.e. Islam, combined with the current recession, combined with general apathy and superstition, you get a yearning for change, particularly, Apocolyptic change.

And to be honest, I think something might happen. Europe is on the brink of economic collapse, food prices are sky rocketing, revolution is spreading throughout the Arab world.

Armchair sociologist, out.

Very good post. Revolt in America simply won't happen, though, until wealth and prosperity have declined to an all-time low. Americans have no reason to revolt because they are (exclude the stupid fucking Pink Floyd pun) comfortably numb. The modern American works a 9-5 job, brings fast food dinner home to his family, who all eat seperately, watches an hour or 2 of tv, then goes to bed. We've been divorced from true happiness and ran into the brace of instant gratification. Revolt will take place when there's no more happiness, and it's going to be soon because when everyone of this party generation turns 40 and realizes how deceiving the bright lights and fast times were, we're going to be upset and disgusted.

I can't agree more. I have never been the same since Perfect Strangers was canceled and I've been ready for a revolution ever since.

tl;dr: Panem et circenses

I think you're overestimating how quickly Americans are going to grow dissatisfied enough to revolt - it'll take a long time. I think that a military dictatorship is much more likely to come first, frankly, or at least a military hand in a democratic glove, as it were.

>when everyone of this party generation turns 40 and realizes how deceiving the bright lights and fast times were, we're going to be upset and disgusted

NEWSFLASH: The party generation is pretty much turning 40 all around you. Kids who were doing X at parties 20 years ago are already disgusted.

and nothing is going to happen

I don't mean that America is going to revolt over something so trivial. I'm just saying the combination of something revolt-worthy and a lack of distractions will be the end.

Well, we're supposed to face water shortages by 2030. Maybe I am a little off on the timing but that's going to cause a lot of shit world-wide.
