Has anyone here read pic related? Even if it should've just been an article, i think it gives an interesting argument as to why it is difficult to achieve certain group goals despite them being in every individual's interest. And why smaller groups can so often get their way over larger groups, despite conflicting interests. One of the better applications of rational choice to politics that i've read.
Anyone want to discuss it?

And that's why special or minority interest groups will always outcompete the unorganized masses that perhaps vote once every 2nd election cycle. The best way to safeguard your interests is by becoming part of a smaller exclusive collective within the individualistic and meritocratic western state. If you don't then you will forever lose our, as people are already organized and pursing their own self-interests, which you sit and wait for the next consumer item to be released.

Sorry guys I have a busy day today and can't actually discuss it.

In groups small enough to where each individual's contribution is either readily identifiable or noticibly impactful towards achieving the collective good, Olson thinks it can occur spontaneously. For larger groups he thinks there needs to be some form of external incentive (most typically coercion) to guarantee individual contributions.

This is one of the most famous works in political science. It should be on those autistic top 100 lists.

I agree wholeheartedly. A strong civil society is key to making sure as many latent interests are represented is a mass democracy. Relying solely on the goodwill of your representative won't safeguard your interests. Reminds me of Tocqueville's discussion of civil associations in America.

Does he talk much about consensus?
I support smaller groups gathering themselves up for presentations at larger meets, where a consensus is sought.

The smaller groups I envision would be specific workplaces or unions, like healthcare, electricians, plumbers, but also a given block. Also concerned with keeping women in the loop so groups of women with their particular concerns need to be represented

the funny thing about butters being so obsessed with commie direct action is the one community she is a part of wants her out of it and only needs the collective direct action to do so lel
