What would a virtue ethicist/stoic do in this situation?

my moped was stolen recently, if the police find it discarded somewhere (which im told is common) i can choose to just take it back or allow them to do a forensic investigation on it and then prosecute the guy who stole it. that would take my time giving a statement and turning up in court and so on, i would gain nothing from it but the guy would be bought to justice.
what is the platonist's or epictetian's choice in this case? would it be only spite to spend my time and convenience prosecuting the guy for no personal gain? what should be done here??

Unfortunately, if you were to live in a decent sized city, the police won't give a shit about a stolen moped. I don't believe it would be worth prosecuting over. Just me persoanlly, I would value the moped in itself over justice for the moped. I hate to not prevent someone from commiting another crime but unless you live in a close knit community, the benefits are marginal.

Unlikely they could track the thief down, and its a waste of tax payers dollars. Only a cheap moped anon.

>Anon realizes he's a dumb cunt so decides to learn to think
>Oops, went too far, now a complete retard
>is made an easy victim of
>hand-wringing abounds as Anon believes living in a society of thieves may be good and chill as he can't conceive of what personal gain he stands to benefit by not
Nigger, you need to back to square one and read the Roman virtues, then fill a very large notebook as you write them out over and over. If you're still a weak faggot who doesn't know what a virtuous man would do after that last page is filled, kys.

You mean they didn't yet, and it's unclear if they ever will? This clearly does not belong to the things you control, and there's no reason to preoccupy yourself with hypotheticals.

Plato would say that the selfish choice would be to take it back, and the compassionate choice would be to try to have the criminal punished. Punishment heals a soul which is corrupted by its own evil deeds. If you really want revenge, you would let the criminal steal your moped 100 times and get away with it every time. His soul would become warped beyond repair

I've read before that there are differences in both metaphysics and ethics between the Greeks and the later Roman ones but is there a QRD on this?

im skeptical of this, why are most criminals reoffenders in that case? why is institutionalisation so common? and even if they are changed, its only to avoid the physical consequence and not for a sincere love of the good

you will both be dead in 100 years. if you get your moped back your only loss is the time spent without the moped. the thief's life is already fucked as evidenced by the fact that he's stealing mopeds. you and the thief are part of the same whole. Any "punishment" that's done to him will be felt by you. His actual punishment is living a life where he doesn't know what's right and wrong, and it would be worse if you tried to add to that with any petty mortal "punishments."

I'm half asleep and read "moped" as "mop" and was surprised that cops would bother tracking a guy who stole a mop.

Because punishment in the modern day is time served in a prison with a comfortable quality of life. During antiquity they would have instead faced shame among their peers or exile.

Move on with your life... whatever you do, don't become a vigilante. It's not worth it.
