I like using it for automated book recommendations. Say you've read 5 books with some common theme or trait, and you want more. On Goodreads you can put them under a single tag, or "shelf", and get recommendations based on these 5 alone.
it's also useful for just keeping track of books you read or you've already read, and writing notes on them - this is especially useful if you mainly get books from a library.
