What are some worthwhile books to read as a beginner learning German? English is my first language, and I find German to be relatively easy. I want to try to read an actual book in German to better my knowledge. Any recommendations?

Thanks. I'll be reading this while refreshing this thread every now and then. People I know who know German say that nouns are relatively easy to learn, but German grammar is much harder. This will help me immensely.

Question, I like to read poetry in different languages, and I am A2/B1 in German. I can read some Goethe and I really like Brecht, but I have very hard time finding poems online. Any german bros willing to help me out with good poetry sites? English has poetry foundation, russian has russian site about poetry and so does my own country. Does Germany have site with most poetry unified?

Heavens, anon. I applaud your efforts, but learning German is pointless. Nonetheless, here are some writers you might want to look into. It's recommended to read them in an English translation though; the authors really wanted to write in English, yet we're lacking the necessary cultural context.

>J.W. Goethe (obviously)
Apart from his poetry, you ought to read Faust (Part one and two). Faust is considered the most important work of German literature by some. Die Leiden des jungen Werthers should be a great starting point, since it's pretty short and a great read.

>Friedrich Schiller
The second most important writer after Goethe. He wrote, among many other things, Ode to Joy, which was used by Beethoven for his 9th symphony. His plays are the most important part of his writing, I would assume. I'll be honest: I haven't read too much Schiller, so I can't really recommend a good starting point. Just pick something out.

>Joseph von Eichendorff
The quintessential poet of German Romanticism. He also wrote other stuff, but his poetry is the most well-known part of his work. You can read his works here...

...but I also recommend getting a collected poems edition.

There are obviously quite a few more German authors than this, but these three should keep you busy for a while. Remember: German was just used out of necessity at the time. Now that we have a better language, you don't need to feel bad for reading these authors the way they were meant to be read: in English.
