op just start with baby steps, say that you forgot your phone and ask someone for the time or for directions. then once you can do that without any anxiety, add something at the end with your "thank you", a little compliment about their outfit (pick something they obviously put attention into -- like a hat or jewelry), an innocuous observation, or whatever. the best people to approach at first imo are people walking their dogs, just complement and ask questions about the dog ("what's his name?", "how old is he?") and pretty soon they'll be telling you their whole life story. also old people, it's sad, but nobody talks to them and they're always happy to find someone who'll listen. also don't be afraid to approach attractive people in the beginning, they get approached so much anyway that their tolerance is a little higher and they'll be pleasantly surprised when you all want from them is the time and to compliment their shoes. after that you can start working your way up to little anecdotes or jokes or whatever because by that time you'll be able to "sense" when someone wants to have a conversation -- and this is the skill you really want to learn. nothing is worse than trying to converse with someone who doesn't want to.

the thing that will get most in your way will be:
1. people that are rude or behave antagonistically for no reason
2. yourself, because you'll think "this is stupid, disingenuous, banal, a waste of time, etc."

for #1 remind yourself that the problem is more likely to be with the other person than with you (unless you're wearing a ski mask or something). they may have a lot on their mind or be rushing off to somewhere or just be suspicious of strangers for something that happened to them in the past. chalk it up to normal variance and move on to the next person.

for #2 ignore the content and focus on the context. what you're saying (and its banality) doesn't matter, only the context in which you're doing it: it's all to decrease your social anxiety. focus on numbers if that helps ("approached X people today") or some small social skill like counting to 5 before you speak (to give the other person ample opportunity to keep speaking), instead of how the other person responds. its these small successes which will rapidly build a sense of security, little bits of evidence which disprove your working hypothesis of "i'm antisocial, unlikeable, ugly, immutable etc."

the truth is, most people these days (especially younger people) are profoundly lonely and insecure. just telling someone you like their hairstyle costs you nothing is probably enough to make their day and that happy mood will influence how they treat others so your small act of kindness gets propagated out to infinity.
