Nationalist in the sense that Lord Byron was a Greek Nationalist.
Seriously /lit/ at what age do people stop thinking in strict dichotomies?

>> No.1854949

I really must object to this. I shan't be judgmental but it appears as though you are responding to yourself in this thread by dropping trip. There must be an end to this silliness. I know your heart is in the right place so please try and not be a bother.

Nationalism is awesome as hell, sorry.

Seriously, what's wrong with liking the place you live and the people you like with, and having a fierce affection for them? I'm certainly attached to the city in which I was born, the people I grew up with. I don't see that there's anything wrong with that. And that kind of impulse, as far as I can see, is at the basis of nationalism.

Obviously you can't go to far with nationalism - but I don't see why people denounce it the way that they do.

You have absolutely no fucking clue what "nationalism" is

Because the concept of the nation-state is outdated. We live in a global society now.

that's fucking stupid frankly and i hope you realize that

although nation-states are definitely irretrievably flawed, but that doesn't make nationalism or the nationalist impulse wrong in themselves. i still submit that a certain kind of nationalism and localism is natural instinct.

Thank you for that well reasoned and fascinating insight.

>although nation-states are definitely irretrievably flawed

How are they flawed? I want to hear you explain it.

>i still submit that a certain kind of nationalism and localism is natural instinct.

Lots of things are natural instincts. That doesn't make them right or wise.

>> No.1855040

Nationalism gives people an excuse for caring for other people than themselves- we needed more nationalism when New Orleans was under water.

>How are they flawed? I want to hear you explain it.

because there's a conflict between nationalism and the liberal state system. the nation-state attempts to found a liberal state system on a national basis. the liberal state therefore, which should be universal, only applies to members of the nation because that's what it's founded on. there's a contradiction between the liberal rule-of-law universalism of the state and the specific, non-universal nationalism which the nation-state is trying to link, and it is bad, cf: the european state system 1900-1945

>Lots of things are natural instincts. That doesn't make them right or wise.

great idea, let's found a political system based on something that people aren't, instead of on the way in which people actually work. i'm sure this project will turn out great.
