Everyone thinks of cool (pic) Kerouac and doesn't realize that barely coherent drunken midwittery was the logical outcome of it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0KluIXx6fI

Seriously, at this point his (false) image is more meaningful than anything he and his pedo/drug-addicted friends wrote (excluding some Burroughs). Just do a google image search of "Jack Kerouac."

Shit take. Mishima is a writer who just happened to have lived a life as interesting as his novels are great. (Both are worth looking into in their own right). Even though the last image he presented to the world is (pic), his actual body of work can stand on its own. Camus smoked cigs with a popped collar, Kerouac flexed his biceps and tried to look distant/brooding...Mishima cut his guts out and had a friend cut off his head.

Yes, I mean, he is definitely the kind of person that is difficult to ignore. I don't think that suiciding and leaving a family behind is cool, but he definitely draws a lot of attention with his life story.

It's more complex than that though. (Personally, I think it was a selfish act by a deluded man...but I don't think it was an empty gesture for the sake of itself; you can attribute it to him ideologically indoctrinating himself (self-radicalization) and being overly romantic...but his actions were the result of living up to a highly developed personal ethos). I doubt any of our deaths will lead to discussions between strangers on another continent.

LARPing free-spiritedness in the 50s and 60s.
Fucking lame. Kerouac was a pathetic drunk who hung out with pedos. He died because he got his ass kicked at a bar for running his mouth. If you think that's an artistic lifestyle you're a pseud...go join NAMBLA and tell them it's because you think the beats are awesome and you want to be like Ginsberg.

haven't said he's a role-model or anything. my statement is true, as he himself thought of life as part of his art. there's a line in On The Road about how he likes people who burn like flames under the stars and all that jazzamatazz. he's no Picasso or Lennon or Hemingway, no, if that was what you were getting at, anon son.

The point of the thread is people that are well known because of their image and not because of the quality of their artistic output. You're literally proving my point by attributing Keuroac's importance to what he represents instead of what he produced.

However, even his (cliche of an) image is a facade. It's attractive to midwits who want to LARP a rough and tumble boho lifestyle when, in reality, Kerouac was just a drunk pretentious pseud who hung around with pederasts and drug addicts. In the end, he died because he LARPed at the wrong bar, ran his mouth, and got his ass kicked. Hardly the depth of wasted potential the beats tried to represent--copying the lost generation while conflating hedonistic pursuits with romanticism and confusing being selfishly pathetic with freedom and tragedy.

Burroughs is the only member of the beats worth reading.
