I got pic related my first book published a few years ago. Got my second book coming out later this year with the same publisher.
My best advice is submit to the little indie publishers. That's what worked for me. There are plenty around nowdays so you should be able to find someone willing to take a punt on you.
I found that the big names just weren't interested.
I wasn't willing to self publish.
So indies it was.
It's worked out okay. I can't quit my day job just yet but i have a real book out there published by a real publisher and that's a huge thing.
I also got shortlisted for a small award but didn't win.
The writing game is a marathon not a sprint. Don't give up because you're not a millioniare in six months.

My book has been in like 2 bookshops, local indie ones of course, again, the big chains aren't interested.
So most of my sales are via the publisher's website, Amazon, Booktopia and that sort of thing.
I did get about 9 or 10 books sold to public libraries mostly here in South Australia. That was nice.
But like i say, i will need my day job for a while yet.
