I love how Tolkien will mingle the moments of peril, of death, of trouble, of immense danger and exhaustion, with moments of rest, of leisure. At the parts you mention, and also in Rivendell, and in Lothlorien, and when Sam and Frodo and Gollum are with Faramir in Ithilien, and when Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Merry, and Pippin are smoking in the ruin of Isengard, and later when Pippin and Gandalf are in Minas Tirith. Tolkien knows that resting is important along the way of a journey. It's almost like reading LOTR is, itself, a journey, and Tolkien is our guide, like Gandalf, and like a good guide he provides us times to rest along the way, before we must plunge again into peril.
