The Witness For The Dead, The Goblin Emperor #2 - Katherine Addison (2021)
Although this is the second in this world, they have only two things in common, a character and the setting. There aren't really any notable goblins in this one, it's almost all elves all the time. There's very little that distinguishes elves from humans in this setting, though the only races presented are elves and goblins, of which there are less difference between them than you may assume.
The protagonist is a melancholy gay elf in a steampunk setting that includes magic. He is a witness for the dead, which means he communes with the dead with the hope of bringing them solace, which can lessen the chance of them rising as a ghoul. This often leads him to investigate the circumstances of troubled deaths, not to bring anyone to justice, but to allow the dead to literally rest in peace.
Though the book is relatively short it has multiple plotlines from a single continuous perspective that isn't separated by chapters. There are slight gaps of continuity separated by a line which serves as the closest semblance of chapter breaks.
While the plot is about resolving the circumstances of deaths, that's only what happens and isn't what the book is about. This is a naturalistic character study detailing his daily life as a disgraced priest who found some redemption but who isn't yet ready to move on with his life, assuming he'd even know how to, let alone want to.
I found it to be a comfortable read, though it wasn't notable in any way for better or worse. I would read more from this setting if there was more. Almost none of this issues I had with the first book are present.
Rating: 3.5/5

Guys, the three body problem is really testing my patience. I'm going to try and finish it off, since I'm late in the book already. But I can't imagine it winning me over in the last third.

In the mean time can anyone tell me what I should read next? I'd like to have something I can begin immediately after the three body problem is done.

I thought the most interesting part of the Goblin Emperor was seeing serious political conflict in a medieval fantasy world that wasn't military, and skipped this one because it didn't look like that would return. not the original 3bp poster but i had the same issues as he and the videogame part really put me off. now, just to see what the fuss was about i had to read some spoilers and understood that this is some form of testing program to attract qualified scientists but... i just don't care. it started off really great though.
Another point is that some of the things leading up to this seem too implausible. And even if it's explained somehow later on, it's just too implausible to keep me interested. That numbers part, you know? Explain that as hard sci fi. I'd have to take a huge fucking leap of suspension of disbelief to make it work in my brain.
Yeah... this and that i don't really care about any of the characters in the book.

Well it's intriguing enough to keep me going so far. That's not the problem. But I simply don't understand a lot of what's happening. Maybe if I knew history then it would be different, but I don't. I have no idea about Chinese politics or communism. And they spend the first few chapters giving an account of people surviving the conflict. And while I did try my best to pay attention, I'm still not sure which political faction is doing what.

And so because I don't have a grasp on anything, it feels like I'm just being blown along on the wind. The story constantly shifting perspectives, and times, and throwing scientific jargon at me constantly, while nothing makes sense. At around 60% through the book(bbout where I cam now), there's a chapter that I feel like is supposed to be this shocking revelation, but all I can think is "why are any of you doing this?" I don't get the motives. They start talking about their political factions again and I'm not understanding why being part of one faction is significantly different from another.

I mean, I do get SOME things. I'm not completely ignorant. And I think I'm piecing things together a little more this late in the book. But I still feel like I'm being strung along. The closest thing I can relate this book to, is the show Lost. And the bunker. and the numbers. Very intriguing, but dragged out, and I'm beginning to doubt the ending will be satisfying.

Also, the game sounds like it was written by someone who has never played a video game before.
And the secreted organizations are really bad at being secret. How they managed to stay hidden for so long is very unbelievable. They're all loosey-goosey with their secrets in a way that reminds me of how conspiracy nuts describe secret societies. Vaguely alluding to elites and celebrities being involved. Government agents blatantly trying to double cross you. Passing innocuous tests that put the MC into the heart of a conspiracy despite his loyalty not ever being tested.

Or another way to describe this book is like listening to Coast to Coast AM. I don't know if you're familiar with that show. It's an old radio show where they talk about mysteries, the supernatural, conspiracies, and anything that can't be explained. Half of the show involved talking to various guests. And half of the show involved taking calls from randos. So sometimes a scientist will come on and talk about space and satellites or whatever, and then they'd take calls, and the callers would start asking how the technology could possibly have come from aliens. And how it can help us communicate with aliens. And how the communist russia is already using the technology. And then start sharing his alien abduction story.

That's basically the entire book so far. Except dragged out for 9 hours in audiobook time.(over 14 hours in total)

It depends on how much narrative focus the cuckolded character gets. If they get a lot of focus, I'd prefer that they don't act pathetic about it. One of the disconnects with audio is dealing with Chinese names. The narrator reads them well enough. It's just hard to follow when you can't see the text. The Chinese names aren't being registered as distinct in my mind. So I'm getting characters confused because the names are all a jumble in my head.

For example: they have Ye Wenjie and Ye Wenxue.(just looked it up on wiki) But in my head is it's more like 叶文洁 and 叶文雪. I can't "read" the sounds, if that makes sense.

I do understand the game: The Three-Body Problem. And none of the technical stuff so far has really thrown me off. It's simple stuff like a signal that decays the farther it reaches. That part I can grasp easily. I just can't wrap my head around the factions and their motives. And which character is working for who. Like the one woman wanted to serve her "lord", but then she gets killed. And I don't know why. Apparently she was part of a faction within the organization that wanted... something? But the other guy wanted something else, so he killed her. And then the old lady killed him because she was part of another faction. I just don't know at this point.

Again, I still have the last third to read, so maybe it will make sense as it continues on. But up to this point the book feels like the slow circling around a drain. Just observing the center from all different angles, taking its sweet time to get to the point.

I'm typing a lot for a book I'm not even finished with. And that's because I'm struggling to define the experience.

Childhood mystery put to bed. I loved Singularity by the same author and I always wanted to read his most acclaimed book, but when I looked 5 or so years ago I couldn’t find an epub. Solid YA speculative fiction, if a bit derivative of Lord of the Flies.

Exactly. The pursuit of something more than a lustful union, love, and a family that begets more love, is something different altogether than the typically hedonistic unions of homosexuals, which lead in partner count, disease and domestic abuse.

I met Brandon Sanderson at a book signing once. I had no idea who he was at the time because I was there for John Scalzi who was the "sideshow." I shook Brandon's hand, told him I haven't read any of your books but I might after today. Then went over to John and said "Hi and thank you for all the books!" >Marion Eleanor Zimmer Bradley (June 3, 1930 – September 25, 1999) was an American author of fantasy, historical fantasy, science fiction, and science fantasy novels, and is best known for the Arthurian fiction novel The Mists of Avalon, and the Darkover series. While she is noted for her feminist perspective in her writing, her popularity has been posthumously marred by multiple accusations against her of child sexual abuse and rape by two of her children, Mark and Moira Greyland, and others, and for enabling her husband at the time (who was an admitted pedophile) to abuse and rape multiple unrelated children.
