Spanish literature thread

Why is Spanish literature in such decline?
All Spanish literature seems to be written for people who read the culture section of El País and have a coffee on a terrace while feeling enlightened by their humble intelligence.
For example the recent book by Irene Vallejo "El Infinito en un Junco", highly praised, it's just insufferable...

This novel answers the question. The Spanish thought they were either commies or falangists or monarchists, but they were all just whores for Anglo tourists and Dutch real estate speculators.

Truth be told, there really isn’t any such a thing as Spain. It’s just thuggery and a money making scheme

It's about the history of books, mostly focusing on Greece and Rome. Apart from all the historicism and presentism that permeates the book, which I guess it's normal for a mainstream writer in Spain nowadays, the worst thing is the cheesy style throughout the book, she even adds personal stories Elvira Lindo style (that says a lot about how bad they are).

Jeez, that does sound bad. Right now I'm reading Francisco Umbral, "Las Ninfas", to be exact. It's a pity that most of /lit/ does not know Spanish, because I'd wholeheartedly recommend it here. The main character is literally /lit/, it's kind of amazing how well Umbral can portray a pretentious literate teenager. The only thing he doesn't have in common with /lit/ is that he gets laid as a teenager, but aside from that, it's impeccable.
