Anybody have any input on which version of Shakespeare's completed works one should buy? I'd rather not buy everything individually. I rented one of the Norton editions in college and remember its layout/formatting and notes quite fondly but I cannot for the life of me find it anywhere online.

Thanks.

This is the one I have and love it. I wouldn't recommend getting The Riverside Shakespeare. Riverside Chaucer on the other hand, definitely get.

I bought the norton shakespeare for $10 as a paperback, I like that one

It's a nice layout. What do you make of the 'modern critical' view of the editors?

I have the Oxford version, second edition. I love everything about it except for the binding, which is glued. I'm worried it won't last long term.

Are there any complete works with sewn binding?

What's the best books you've read on Shakespeare/his works?
Or what's the best intro in your opinion?

>> No.18463018

Norton 3rd is the way to go. Oxford's newest edition has many questionable editorial choices, ranging from wild readings in textual cruxes to including just the fragments they attribute to Shakespeare in other plays outside the canon instead of the whole play/scene, even if not by Shakespeare's hand alone. Not only that, but the general introduction itself tries way too hard to appeal to a younger audience by showing how hip and woke Shakespeare is. It's just a really bad edition in general. I own the Norton one and can vouch for its quality.

I've walked this road many times, brothers. The editions you should get are Norton, Pelican or RSC (all are good). Anything else is degenerate, especially Oxford. Riverside is outdated. We've been through this matter in many threads from the past.

Not in the way that you mean. The layout and many editorial decisions are outdated (awkward and hard to manouver, the notes are scarce and unhelpful, the names are abbreaviated, etc). I had it and it was so annoying to read that I had to send it back. It had nice pictures and essays, though.

Like I said, get Norton, Pelican or RSC.

I don’t like the Riverside
Bulky, unwieldy and poorly formatted. It just sits on my shelf. It’s easier to buy individual plays.
