I hate Dune. I read 8 pages before realizing it was shit. Having to flip back to a glossary every half page just to find out that the neologism is just a word he made up for an everyday item like a knife is absurd.

I read somewhere that men prefer to talk about ideas, women prefer to talk about people given that women evolved to be more social than men. Maybe that's what put them off, Dune is idea-heavy (although I'd say it's character focused).

I think you need go read it again and maybe the sequels. You'll see that Paul is a tool, a pawn that goes awry. But he's still a tool being used by everyone around him. First the Bene Gesserit, then the Fremen. In the sequel he is torn over how he is just a figurehead for the Jihad and has no way of stopping it. Dune itself is partly about him trying to avoid this future. It requires pace and patience to read, it isn't a typical pew pew laser go boom sci fi novel. Not everyone's cup of tea no, but god is it great to read when you're stoned.
