Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
Thoughts?

He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”

The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.

He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

Before Jesus says, “Do not cast your pearls before swine,” He says, “Do not give dogs what is sacred.” An analogy mentioning dogs is also used in Proverbs: “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly” (Proverbs 26:11). A dual reference to swine and dogs is also found in 2 Peter 2:22, “Of [false teachers] the proverbs are true: ‘A dog returns to its vomit,’ and, ‘A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.’” In His sermon, Jesus uses dogs and pigs as representative of those who would ridicule, reject, and blaspheme the gospel once it is presented to them. We are not to expose the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have no other purpose than to trample it and return to their own evil ways. Repeatedly sharing the gospel with someone who continually scoffs and ridicules Christ is like casting pearls before swine. We can identify such people through discernment, which is given in some measure to all Christians (1 Corinthians 2:15–16).

The command not to cast your pearls before swine does not mean we refrain from preaching the gospel. Jesus Himself ate with and taught sinners and tax collectors (Matthew 9:10). In essence, the instruction in Matthew 7:6 is the same that Jesus gave to His apostles when He said, “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town” (Matthew 10:14). We are to share the gospel, but, when it becomes apparent that the gospel is not welcome, we are to move on. We are responsible to share the good news; we are not responsible for people’s response to the good news. Pigs don’t appreciate pearls, and some people don’t appreciate what Christ has done for them. Our job is not to force conversions or cram the gospel down people’s throats; there’s no sense in preaching the value of pearls to swine. Jesus’ instruction to His apostles on how to handle rejection was to simply go elsewhere. There are other people who need to hear the gospel, and they are ready to hear it.

Truly amazing. Is there a chance that us people still haven’t figured out Christianity yet? Im sure with so many questions and arguments we still haven’t experienced Christianity to its fullest.

>> No.18438635

Both dogs and pigs are unclean animals. The symbolism, though it sounds harsh, is that the people who have rejected God and his people are not sacred and not clean.

The gospel should be preached to all people, but the children of Satan (Jn 8) will only trample the truth and go on the offensive in their hatred of God and the things of God. When an unbeliever who refuses God, though deep down they know the truth, hears the gospel, they are enraged. Christ says that they may be trampled by them. The other thing the “swine” may be is indifferent. In either case, moving on to fertile soil is in order.

This will obviously come on a spectrum of severity. Some will stop at glaring and verbally tearing down the truth-teller. Others have violently persecuted prophets and preachers, even killing them.

The Jews often referred to their Roman occupiers, and indeed anyone outside of the Jewish nation, as dogs. Paul often spoke of “dogs” as even those Jews who rejected the true gospel and wanted to intermingle the Jewish laws with Christianity. This is clear in Philippians 3:2 where he says “Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh” which speaks of circumcision and the Jewish or Mosaic Laws, thus it appears that what we are not to give to the dogs are the precious truths of God because they won’t act upon them anyway. Jesus knew men’s hearts and knew who would believe and who would reject Him (Matt 9:4; Luke 9:47). The first part of Matthew 7 was about those who unfairly judged so maybe Jesus was saying that giving this message of not judging when the person is a hypocrite would only be like casting pearls before swine or giving what is holy (the gospel) to the dogs (who reject the gospel). Then this “pearl” (of the gospel) is wasted on casting it before the unregenerate and unrepentant “swine” because they’ll only “trample it under their feet.” This seems to fit what the author of Hebrews wrote about in 10:29 “How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace.” When Jesus used the word “they” for “they will trample it under their feet” it seems to include both the dogs and the swine. Now, after they trample it under foot, then they turn on the one who cast it before them. We later see that the Jewish leaders who had long since been awaiting the Messiah turned on Jesus and tore Him to pieces…quite literally.

I always interpreted the dogs and the swines as the unteachable, the fools (for one because of Proverbs 26:11). The holy things and pearls are the pieces of wisdom and truth taken from the word, and certainly include the Gospel.

There is a clear distinction between sinners and fools. Sinners might be teachable, and fools might at a time even have accepted Christ, but are not willing to go deeper and be taught further.

On the other side we are not to judge people. Yet we need to be wise. Proverbs 9:8 tells us that rebuking a fool will have him hate you. That is by no means what we want. Thus, if we find somebody to be unteachable, we stop teaching him. But we certainly do not stop praying for the person.

Agreed. I do not have any social media or anything of the sort, and only come here for Christianity interactions. Except the goyim whom like >>18437946 explained were seen as dogs until proven innocent which is contrasted with the Jews who were only said to be dogs/swine after the first round of pearls had been trampled.

But yes you are correct. If the goyim groveled and prostrated themselves to Jesus; accepting their dog status and unworthiness as the woman did, then Jesus grafted them on to the tree. Makes me as a "goyim" feel so blessed and grateful.
