18442959 No.18442959 [Reply] [Original]

Currently homeless. Just finished this. Hits hard man. My life is a never ending spiral of trying to attain wealth and I can't manage my finances. Prostitutes and strippers. And alcohol. I never figured myself as "depressed", but I can see myself succumbing to a simliar fate as Oba. A useless existence where one is a slave to vice and hedonistic escapism.

Bout to check out Junji Ito's Manga next.

I just finished this today too, what a fucking terrible book. The only good part was when he was fucking with the commies.

My eyes rolled all the way back at the line after his Dad dies and he can't even suffer anymore.

If you relate to this at all anon, you are a fucking moron that self sabotaged yourself from the start and ignored every opportunity given to you.

No Longer Human is good but The Setting Sun is better. It was selling like hot cakes because it was sensationalized as hell in Japan due to Dazai's death.
Oba is basically an unreliable narrator and many readers it too literally, mainly because most of them never read Dazai's other books.

I agree. The Setting Sun is a sincerely good book. No Longer Human is an interesting story but it’s too “real”. It meanders too much, it tries too hard to be detached, too autobiographical. Were it not for Dazai’s personal life story, the book would have been considered mediocre at best.
