THIS

you have to understand, YA is a millennial phenomenon.
Zoomers don't read YA, they either don't read, read classics, or read pop-lit (race, class, instagram poetry)

If you can somehow find a way to get Zoomers as invested in original literature as they are in their fanfics, you'll be a millionaire.

It honestly wouldn't take any more than the right story at the right time to get Zoomers into reading. Remember, Millennials weren't reading until Harry Potter came along. Sure, Harry Potter is shit, along with most YA, but at least it was something they read, when they didn't read before. It's the same with Zoomers. They're a generation waiting for their book.

I feel like phone-induced shortened attention spans may have greatly hurt the chances of that. This generation's novel would have to be something that could be read in short, bite-sized parts, and forgo more excessive details and fleshing out of the world and characters being set up.

Kids only read YA. It's absolutely not dead. John Greene, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter are all still extremely popular. My 7 year old brother is currently reading the Stick Dog series. I recently purchased The Little Prince for him to read to see how much S O V L he really has.
There were some tiktok kids who were reading other things. Ted K was a big meme there, plus the netflix documentary came out recently. I think it pushed a lot of the more politically minded into reading his manifesto.

Literally this. Books, short stories? Sure that's understandable, not everyone's cup of tea. But zoomers literally hate reading of any kind: essays, articles, blogs, forum posts, tweets even. The most infuriating zoomer habit is hitting YouTube for help with a program before reading the documentation.
