I'm looking for any and all literature/multimedia that contains stories about a main character who is altruistic to the point of it being detrimental to his well being.

Are there any stories out there where the main character has to become evil to succeed?

Actually most of Maugham's work involve this premise to a varying degree. Moon & Sixpence is just an excellent example.

Painted Veil is another

THAT'S ALRIGHT, I KNOW YOU'RE ONLY TRYING TO HELP, AND THAT'S GOOD.

lmao You precisely described Justine/Juliette from Marquis de Sade. Justine suffers because of her Virtue, and Juliette succeeds on Vice. Two separate novels, both written in painfully complex prose.

Justine suffers from more of a religious virtue and modesty than strict altruism.
