18433978 No.18433978 [Reply] [Original]

I need a book to gift a goth alt zoomer. the point is to signify how smart I am while also being enjoyable for a female to read. So like "the waste land" but not. or like bataille's "story of the eye" but not so "i would fuck you literally right now". but also not Gothic since that's too BookTuber and on the nose. and not a female either like Emily Bronte or Flannery O'Connor which work great in theory, and thematically, but i clearly would only get that because she's a female and that might be patronizing, and really it doesn't signify how smart i am.

the work HAS TO have a good Wikipedia page (in the likely case she doesn't read it). for example, if the wiki page says something like "one of the most important works of the 20th century". poetry is probably the best bet

i dont need technique critique (this is going to work, i am going to fuck her), i just need suggestions. suggestions?

How about Virginia Woolf? I just gave Woolf to a girl and it payed off. Also maybe Christian Bobin, a girl recently sent me some Bobin (who I had never heard of before) and I was blown away. Maybe it would work in reverse too. The big problem there is that Bobin may be too wholesome and not edgy enough for what you're looking for. To get edgier, I'd recommend maybe someone like Artaud, Kazantzakis, or Blanchot, but they may be pushing the meter for "also enjoyable for a female to read". Some of Rimbaud's poetry is good, and also kind of hot. Think about that? I read Mallarme to a girl once and we ended up fucking. She was already into that kind of shit though.

Perhaps Emily Dickenson. That's also worked for me before. I think sometimes girls kind of like it when you give them female authors, but it has to seem genuine and not sleezy/weaselly, if you know what I mean. I used to give my first gf poems by Kahlil Gibran and she absolutely loved that. Also stuff from "The Lifted Lamp" by Grace Noll Crowell feels the same as Gibran. Perhaps even Toni Morrison, or some other black author, like that guy who wrote "Fences". I forgot his name. That's all I can think of for now, but I can discuss these suggestions with you.

What a post this is. So many names I'm not at all familiar with that I'll have to check out before finalizing. Woolf definitely crossed my mind but any time I tried reading her (although this is a paradox and a conflation of my true goal, to seem smart and to fuck) I was bored to death. I was hoping for something that had either emo or goth or sexual "spice" to it, and Woolf is Day 1 Female Lit. Rimbaud is definitely in the right area, but I'm much too pseud to recognize the other names so excuse my pseudry while I say, thanks will definitely check those out.
>I think sometimes girls kind of like it when you give them female authors, but it has to seem genuine and not sleezy/weaselly, if you know what I mean.

Hahaha yeah I don't like Woolf all that much either. I actually read her in high school, before I was aware of her reputation and all that. I just saw her name in some paper and got interested, then speed-read four or five of her books. I guess it's been good to be familiar, but whenever a girl wants to talk about her I don't directly speak ON Woolf -- instead I connect her to authors I actually enjoy, or talk about madness and authorship, or something like that. Yeahhh that book might be harder to pull off. Overall, I'd try not to overthink it too much -- maybe just attempt to make this a fun way to connect with her, not super serious, so there's not as much of a risk factor if it doesn't go great. Idk if that makes sense.

Kerouac in my head is a top choice but I had originally thrown out the idea since I couldn't remember how interesting he would be to a female
