I'm interested in the idea of myth and how it relates to literature, history, nationalism, etc. Is Joseph Campbell a good author to start with?

>> No.18399368

Nationalism? Campbell is more about identifying universal patterns of the hero story across various mythologies and religions. How these have given meaning to people's perception of the cosmos, their short role in it, etc. Campbell is good tho.

You don't sound like the kind of person who is actually interested in reading, but pic related is all about explaining myth as ideology in narrative form.

That's good too. Thanks for responding.

Thank you for the recommendation, I didn't know about it

I've thought of Junger, but isn't he a rather advanced thinker? I fear he might be above my level.

If you are not as interested in reading, you should watch John David Ebert's video series on mythology on youtube. He studied all of Campbell and is great at concise articulate lecturing.

I think he means Carl Gustav Jung, anon

It is. I found a one-volume edition of it at my used-book store. The print is so small I have to read it with a magnifying glass, but I had to have it. For OP, yes Campbell is a good author to start with. More accessible if you're just getting into the subject than writers like Frazer or Jung, although you'll get to them eventually.

ignore jung and campbell posters, eliade is the answer you're looking for
start with myth of the eternal return and follow it up with myth and reality

>I've thought of Junger, but isn't he a rather advanced thinker?
I can't tell if this is bait, but junger had a better grasp of the western canon than jung, definitely a more respectable thinker
everyone should read eumeswil
