There's a word that's thrown around a lot about stories that I always thought was another generic word for scary or spooky until I read the short story How to Talk to Girls at Parties, by Neil Gaiman: Haunting.

It's become my favorite short story, and I'm looking for more like it. It doesn't need to be scary or even necessarily creepy, and I'm really looking for a short story more than a novel or collection of stories. I just want something that sort of sticks with you, gives you that cool, spooky feeling without the stab of actual fear.
The closest thing to it I read recently was the Daenerys chapter in A Clash of Kings where she goes through the house of the Undying.

"The Truth is a Cave in The Black Mountains" by Gaiman again.

'Wildcat" by Flannery O'connor.

"The Last Question" by Isaac Asimov.

You might not enjoy these three as much as i did, but i'm trying to help you anyway.

that story is so god-damn popular and i still don't see why. it's a bit of science speculation, or idle mindfuckery i guess, beneath a thin veneer of narrative. it's hardly a story at all, it's far from asimov's best work, and yet peopl revere it as the most brilliant thing ever. for god's sake, in a story about haunting stories, does the last question really ned to be recommended? is it a particularly unsettling or weird or eerie story? thought provoking, i'll grant you; but haunting, i don't think. and it's such a weak story and ah man it just bothers me.
