That's exactly what it's about. It's peak incel lit. Even the common a trope of mass shooters where the poisonous outside influence manipulates the vulnerable outcast. It's much better than Notes From Underground or what have you. Mishima was unironically and literally ahead off his time.

Kawabata and Oe, both Nobel Prizes. Tanizaki too, see Makioka Sisters, but his pulpy novels are more famous in the West. Koko Abe isn't bad either.

*Obviously* Natsume Soseki, specially his later works (not a big fan of his coming-of-age comedies) or Akutagawa. Not sure of what authors of this early period are translated. I enjoyed the prose of Izumi Kyoka.

As for modern writers, Yoko Ogawa has a lot of range and is way better than Murakami. I haven't read Hiromi Kawakami, but some of her titles seem inviting.

>> No.18399866

>>18392050
haruki murakami is partly comfy partly boring but overall overrated, ryu murakami is an edgelord but i did laugh reading from the fatherland with love, natsume soseki is criminally underrated on /lit/, kobo abe is weird as shit. dazai and kawabata i haven't read yet. the thing with mishima is that apart from a few exceptions(sound of waves, sun and steel) most of his books that got translated are reiterations of the same theme.

>> No.18399884

>>18399866
Kawabata is the best jap writer.
Mishima falls varying degrees short of greatness in everything i've read, but maybe the sea of fertility is genuinely great?

No he is not. He hates nuclear power and right wingers

>> No.18399946

>>18399884
I'm afraid that (at least) the later two entries of Fertility fall for the same trap. There are moments of genius and Mishima's core themes reach their complete form, but there's some inconsistency. Spring Snow and Runaway Horses are great though.

Kawabata is great and very Japanese, but he lacks the cerebral appeal of Mishima. Also, it feels as it he loses a lot in translation.
