And the vast majority of Germans are eager to speak and read English, if given the opportunity. If you're a native English speaker, you've won the language jackpot already.

Reading this made me sad. I'm not saying English skills aren't important in a world where the United States enjoys the status of a cultural and economic superpower. But at the same time, don't you take any pleasure in your own language? I consider myself a native speaker of English and another language, and I am very fond of that language too. I've been trying too, but I just find it so much harder to be eloquent in German. I'm always grasping for words.
Plus, when writing and speaking English, I feel like I'm somehow connected to a more extensive culture.
The German cultural identity is almost entirely dead. Every cultural artifact that we have is a simple and objectively worse carbon copy of an American original. It's hard to engage with that.

Odd, but I get where you're coming from. We have it somewhat better in Austria since our state ethos isn't entirely negative yet, but it's definitely not going to go upward in the near future.
As for the eloquence in German part, I hear this frequently from our countrymen (I'll just lump us together for this point since nobody else cares anyway). "Oh, with English you can just express so much more!" This mostly comes from people who consume English media all day, every day; they binge netflix shows (of course in English because they want to show how smart they are by knowing another language), advertising overflows with anglicisms and then there's of course the internet just like here. It is absolutely no wonder that no sense of eloquence in German develops when your brain is under a constant English barrage - and it is a shame, since our language is capable of beauty and elaborate yet clever sentence constructions English could never keep up with. Take a really advanced German book and compare it to the English translation - it's a trainwreck if the translator didn't take a lot of liberties to dodge the impossibilites.
