18381008 No.18381008 [Reply] [Original]

Reading this atm, what am I in for?
Am I wrong for thinking Elizabeth is the authors self insert and Mr Darcy is her dream man? The description of him seemed stupid and the idea that people wouldn't like him cause he was arrogant and socially weird seems dumb to me
What should I read after btw?
I'm trying to expand my taste and read more female authors especially in the romance genre

Nobody likes him though, he pissed off a bunch of people and the people that don’t dislike him are just putting him on a pedestal because he’s rich.

Sure but she mentions how tall and handsome and noble he was
Idk if my mind has just been ruined by reading too many romance manga with girls pining over guys like that

Jane Austen is amazing. Realize that the substance lies in the characters and their interactions. The amazing, soft irony that mounts up. It's like reading a pink cloud

It's pretty funny so far, idk if the text is being supplemented in my mind cause I've already watched the BBC adaptation but it seems good and I like the characters

I mean he is kind of a dick in the 1st half. To answer your question, overall it can drag at points but the dialogue can be fun and witty at points. Like an 19th century sitcom

Thanks for the recommendations anon, feels a bit embarrassing to read non classic romance though even though I know that's stupid...
>>18381714
Oh wait, I'm kind of confusing myself with what I wrote, I mainly meant the audience wouldn't like him, not the characters
Like surely it was a cliche to have a proud and arrogant character won over in the end
>>18381765
Well originally I just wanted to rewatch the BBC adaptation cause i'm bored but i'm scared of pirating so decided to just try reading it for the first time, I tacked on the other stuff cause i'm curious if there's anything else worth reading
For the last month or so I've been boring myself trying to read history and want something fun and more human for once
>>18381808

Pic related, I genuinely hate this book but if you're an English speaking writer it's basically required reading because it changed a lot of how novels are written. I've had to read it 3 times for 3 different classes

>> No.18382367

>>18381008

The whole book is summarized in the title.

It's "meh".
