Book Review: The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy

Pros
-Complex, pensive, and multi-dimensional characters
-Commentary about the perceived faults of the bourgeoisie (their relationship with life and death)(selfishness)(shallowness)(hedonism)(Unwarranted Self-entitlement)(Status obsession)
-Exalting of peasant values (simplicity, honesty, altruism)
-Makes the reader question oneself (I felt guilty for not caring about the processes of the funeral at the beginning of the novel)
-A very peculiar, effective, and unique way of describing feelings and events: with plenty of description and imagery.
-Realistic (Realism, go figure)
-Russian Literature
-Effected my morality (my notion of life and death) in a positive way
-Great philosophical ponderings can be derived by the content of this story (what should one truly try to get out of life?)
-Great description of the inner-psyche at work
-Interesting choice of non-linear narration and sequence
-Perfect example of capturing the spirit of his time
Cons
-Melancholy (not nearly enough comic relief)
-Slow start
-Somewhat stereotypical (maybe that’s why they become stereotypes, because they are common)

Wizardry. (I also have an unbelievable ability to tell you what time it is, usually down to the minute, if I know what time it was when I left the house) (I can also guess within 1-2$ of how much my groceries will cost).

Power of estimation.

I've written a couple of these book reviews on /lit/.

I've done Metamorphosis (8.4), 1984 (Went from 6.5 to 7.3), Les Miserables (8.2), I've done War and Peace but have not saved it (didn't get 9), A Room of One's Own (3).

I've read loads of books, and I'll be doing loads more of these reviews.

Hamlet would prob get 9+

Even though it is a play and all that bullshit, I should still do a review.

There was comic relief in the book! The goofiness of making the kind peasant boy...S-somehting hold Ivan Ilyich's legs up all night.

The start was rather...slow... (paraphrased) "Some dude who works at the government office has a colleague who croaked and now he is all antsy about doing a favour for some chump and filling the position with one of his wife's relatives."

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRING

and that is all.

what the fuck is wrong with you? The purpose of that set-up was to point out the morality flaws of everyone in upperclass Russia, and to foreshadow his realization - "his face was peaceful, like he had just discovered a great truth, but also foreboding, as if he wanted to send a warning to the living". The character it followed saw the wake as an inconvenience despite being Ivan's "friend", everyone tried to get their own personal gain from his death, including his wife, and everyone left early so it wouldn't interrupt bridge night.

That's fucking great, jesus. Fuck you.

Fuck off and die. You have no business reviewing masterful pieces of literature until you've at least read enough to pick up proper language usage.

Good point. I'm not saying it wasn't essential, I'm just saying it was a little dull. Not every scene in a movie can be exciting, because some scenes serve to set up the climax and other things etc.

Don't be so upset. I've read way longer and more boring books.

>to produce as an effect; bring about; accomplish; make happen

What I said:
>Effected my morality (my notion of life and death) in a positive way
>Brought about positive change in my morality

Used the word correctly. This is why I graduated with honours and you didn't.

>> No.1836842

>>1836825
The word doesn't mean"brought about positive change;" it means "brought about." If you did not have morality then "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" caused you to gain a sense of morality, you could say that the book effected your morality. If you mean to say that the book had an effect on your morality (other than creating it), you use "affect".

By the way, I will be a senior in English at Yale next year, on tract to graduate magna cum laude. I'm also a member of phi beta kappa. Go fuck yourself in you god damned pretensions, presumptuous ass.

Thank you for admitting that I used the word correctly.

Fine, if you honestly meant to say that you had no sense of morality until you read the book and then it gave you a sense of morality, you used the word correctly. But, if the book had such an incredibly profound effect (used as a noun here and therefore spelled with an "e") on you, you should have given it a ten.
