The Iliad. Fagles and Fitzgerald are great layman's translations; Lattimore is for a closer rendering of the Greek. Basically any of the three are solid starting points, and you can compare their translation styles here. https://iliad-translations.com/translation-comparison/ . Naturally The Odyssey is your follow up read, and the translation suggestions apply there as well. It may also be a good idea (depending on how familiar you are with classical mythology on the whole) to pick up Edith Hamilton's Mythology: Gods and Heroes, or Richard P. Martin's Myths of the Ancient Greeks. Both are terrific entry level reads for background to the Homeric epics, and just to literature in general.

I am never going to understand why people recommend Hamilton. Not only are most people not going to actually get all that much out of it, but the majority of the theoretical value a hypothetical reader would get from it would probably be better suited to be learned via a footnote, if the edition has it for that particular bit of mythology, or just searching Wikipedia or something when you don't understand the mythological context of something. It would be one thing if Hamilton's Mythology was interesting to read, but it's absolutely not.

That list is trash because it has lots of mediocre books. Not bad books, mind you, but very mediocre ones which can't be seriously compared to its neighbours. I do understand that this chart is a result of the poll and that it shows the popularity of certain books rather than their worth but still why do anons read so much Faulkner, Dick and Tolkien?
Also, where is Houellebecq? Every day there is a thread or two about him and yet he isn't present.

>> No.18363026

>where's Houellebecq?
votes for him might be distributed to his five or so known books, hence none of them make the top 100. he'd be included in a top 100 authors.

I'm not talking about the book. I'm talking about the reaction she elicits when ever someone here brings her up (she's a very polarising character). I was thinking though, just based on popularity, if any of her works were to be in this list Atlas Shrugged is probably more likely. The Fountainhead is better though... at least in my opinion.

I see you're still hanging off my every word, shows you're a no-life loser (which does correlate with being a moron). I think at this point I have to explain since you're too stupid to take the hint: self-serious has a hyphen. It's a dumb phrase to use but you also used in incorrectly which makes you look even more retarded (along with the lego batman gif you posted in an attempt at a gotcha moment). I know you're too childishly arrogant to have the self-awareness, or intelligence, to admit you were wrong so I'll let you have the last word since you equate that to success. All you've posted is the 'no u' meme from the beginning. It doesn't bother me, it's just pathetic. As expected from a loser ferociously defending Harry Potter.
