I'm 220 pages into Demons and all that's happened is an over-dramatized sucker punch. Uh...when does it get good?

I just started it too, I'm about 50 pages in, and I've loved it so far.

"Oh my friends," he sometimes exclaimed, inspired, "you cannot imagine what sorrow and anger seize one's soul when a great idea, which one has long and piously revered, is picked up by some bunglers and dragged into the street, to more fools like themselves, and one suddenly meets it in the flea market unrecognizable, dirty, askew, absurdly presented, without proportion, without harmony, a toy for stupid children!"

It reminded me of "that wasn't real communism!" He's a pseud pussy and almost everything he's said and done so far is hilarious.

Also, I'm not going to write it up but the part where Varvara mentions to her salon that she might start up a magazine, only to have 4 random people show up to her house and tell her a meeting has been held; they've decided she's allowed to but will turn it over to them and go back to where she came from (they'll send her a small portion of any money it makes).

I don't understand how you can think that stuff is boring.

Anon was right making fun of you for the "it wasn't real communism argument." The only rebuttal needed is you being filtered by defining something by it's endstate/ideal instead of just listening when it was pointed out ideologues are the target of the quote (i.e. you were triggered by an analogy referencing a meme).

Besides, strictly defining something that's nebulous and multidimensional only invites you to move the goalposts from the fact you were filtered. I mean, making the argument that a multifaceted social/economic/political AND philosophical ideal, not to mention the complex historical iterations of its various implementations in varying cultural contexts, should be defined on a message board in order to qualify someone for saying you were filtered? You're a retard. Don't read the book (it's about, but not meant for, people like you).

This book is easily the darkest and most fucked up book by Dostoevsky; keep reading anon. There are still 3 or so specific scenes that stick out in my mind very starkly where I had this pretty horrific existential dread just forced on me. No, Demons was the last book I read by Dostoevsky. I read The Idiot -> C&P -> Notes from the Underground -> Brothers K -> Demons with a ton of his short stories intermixed in there. I've not read Poor People yet though or the Gambler.

Brothers K is the best book, and possible the best book ever written by anyone ever, but all Dostoevsky books are eldergod-tier. Demons was just especially dark, the first half every ins likable in their won weird way and has some absurd comedy in it, but then shit just get fucking depressing very fast

i.e. "It wasn't real communism" is what people say when they're possessed by an ideal (i.e. Demons). That was the point. You were filtered.
