Pan Arabism groups a lot of distinct cultures and dialects under one umbrella, and allows people to make the assumption that all Arabs are from the peninsula and not ethnically distinct. Thus it leads to the idea that Arab history started with the Rashidun conquest and obscures the ancient connection each different culture has with their land. By the way I hate the obsession with the French as much as you do, so I get what you mean.
