If you're smart, you quickly realize this is a thing regardless of consumerism. If it wasn't consumerism, it was some other irritating obsession that you find unbearably trivial. Alcoholism, knitting, stamp collecting, and every other weird obsession you can think of that occupies people's thoughts in some way. Your problem is that you have a broader mindset than most people which is oriented towards more general questions. Most people are not like this. There is a more sickening element to consumerism because it is actually a targeted and exploitative practice which is utilized "against" those very same people I just mentioned, and this is what I meant by it being a marginal problem. It is a tool for making money from those materialistic obsessive tendencies that the common person already possesses. In a way, it actually benefits them when you consider it is merely catering to their instincts in the way that book learning caters to the instincts of those with broader minds.

Basically, you have to step back for a minute and realize that it is not consumerism which has damaged your friends. It's just part of their personality, and humans have been like that for as long as there has been written history. You can find it in writings from all over history when men of words, nobility, or other sorts happen to come into contact with lower types, and it becomes evident in their disdain for the lower types. This disdain for the person is today shifted as full blame onto consumerism, as though it is some evil bogeyman that has turned many people into "consumers." Anyone who is above and beyond consumerism psychologically will rise beyond it inevitability, and it won't affect them. It doesn't affect me at all, I can see all of the advertising, marketing, temptations, and I'm quite ambivalent when I do see it, but in general I simply steer clear of it, which is an easy enough task.
