Has anyone read the works of Krasznahorkai? I just finished watching Werckmeister Harmonies and it was an unmitigated masterpiece. One of the very few works of film that has obvious literary value. It makes me want to read fiction again. I know that it was adapted from and by Krasznahorkai, but does the film get its beauty and profundity from Bela Tarr or Krasznahorkai? I know there is a similar situation for Satantango, which is apparently an even more well-regarded film. How is The Melancholy of Resistance, or Satantango?

>> No.18325963

Yep, he's great, among the best living writers. Satantango and The Melancholy of Resistance are good places to start. Other than those two, his other best works are Baron Wenckheim's Homecoming and Seiobo There Below. The last one is my personal favorite, although quite different than the others.

>> No.18325968

I've read Satantango and Seiobo There Below, haven't seen any of the movies. I enjoyed both books but it's been a number of years since I've read them so I don't remember much of the details. It doesn't hurt to give it a shot if you liked the movies.

Awesome, that's good to hear. I just read an excerpt of The Melancholy of Resistance which to my pleasure almost reminds me of Faulkner, not just in the punctuation/syntax but in the flow and rhythm of narration. More muted perhaps, but that's hardly inappropriate. I saw a copy of The Melancholy of Resistance for $1 at a public bookstore library last Saturday and now I'm kicking myself for not getting it; his works seem to be more expensive than most fiction (or at least hard to find used for cheap). I'll keep an eye out for his stuff. Thanks.

I've read that after Satantango/Melancholy his work sort of changes in direction as he took trips to Japan/etc/etc. Is there any truth to that? That's not a problem, but if the films are anything in mood like the novels they would more what I'm looking for at this particular moment.

I have read Satantango and The Melancholy of Resistance.
I think I liked Satantango but I have absolutely no feelings towards Melancholy of Resistance

I love Laszlo K, I’ve read just about everything of his that’s been translated into English. Reading Destruction and Sorrow Beneath the Heavens now. I agree with the other anons, Satantango / Melancholy are great places to start. You should check out The Turin Horse for another Laszlo K film. It’s slow, almost unbearably, but very beautiful.

Melancholy is brilliant. Urge you to read that first because it’s a great introduction and you’ll find it richer fresh if you loved the movie that much.

Can also confirm Seiobo brings strong Japanese aesthetics into the equation

>> No.18328319

He's great, but the weeaboism in Seiobo is a little ridiculous

I have also only read Melancholy and Satantango after watching the movies, both Bela Tarr and Krasznahorkai are great. I read that his biggest inspiration was Under the volcano by Lowry.

The musician that made Tarr's soundtracks in addition to playing the main role in Satantango is also great, it's so nice to see such encounters of talents

Depends on the book. Seiobo There Below has a very strong Japanese influence, while Baron Wenckheim doesn't, it feels closer to his early works.

currently reading melancholy of resistance after having rewatched the movie, it's harder to follow than satantango but i have no idea what to make of it. it's very enjoyable but i have no idea what is the message (if there is any), what the whale means (if anything). i was hoping i would find some sort of explanation for the movie but no luck lol
maybe i need to read more kafka to get it. i plan on reading war & war next, then either seiobo or baron wenckheim, depending on how i'm feeling
btw, anyone know anything about herscht 07769?

Thing was, the different European chapters were all meaningfully different, with new perspectives and time periods and ideas, whereas Japanese craftsman stoically makes a mask in painstaking detail or Japanese craftsman stoically makes a temple in painstaking detail is just treading water, especially given that there's a whole fucking world of non-Japanese artwork out there. It's not fatal to the book or anything, it just makes his Nippon-boner very apparent.
