She only cut herself once in two years and it was across her heart because I made her upset. Everything before that left scars which to my understanding was because her parents weren't really nice to her.
We've obviously been apart for a very long time but I like to think she got over cutting and became a healthy well adjusted individual.

Some people will say that the differences are based off music but for someone that lived it that was never the case.
Emo for us was short for emotional because you'd focus on the pain and suffering of life and the fact you're forced to live it.
Gothic people are a lot more logical (don't look at me like that) about the whole thing and kind of celebrate the shadows as we dance around in them.
Goths are the ones that want to go to pretty ballroom dances and masquerades, wander around graveyards at night, write books about the afterlife. Can be a bit sanguine too. I'm still kinda sad we lost the right to the word black. We can't say our souls are black because that means something entirely different now.
Alas.

It helps to have a friend circle that enjoys the dress up, and to have a good sense of humor about it. I was just out of high school when we were all doing all the goth stuff that we did.
Nowadays most of my clothing is work outfits and a basic t shirt and jeans for shopping errands (..and I've lost a lot of hair up top) but if I was in a group or paired up with another gothic girl I wouldn't mind getting back in the saddle.
Would I do it alone on my shopping trips just to express myself? Well, I'm in my 30s now and there's no reason to dress to impress.
Moonlight touched girls do make the heart go pitter patter ever still though.
(My music taste is dated, but if you want some goth music while reading your goth books I like Evanescence, HIM, Panic at the Disco, Avril Lavigne, Emilie Autumn and Within Temptation)
...and of course the one genre of music that all goths must like...classic European ballroom music and violin.
We're not hard rockers. We're sweet and serene.
