Old English (Beowulf), Middle English (Chaucer), Modern English (Shakespeare), Contemporary English (Tyrone Johnson). Let's be honest here, Contemporary English is its own thing, particularly because of the kneeggerization and americanization of the language. We are living in a new age for English.

Shakespeare is mutually intelligible with modern English which is why it is described as modern.

Shakes is Early Modern English if we're going to be technical but I didn't know any representative writer of the Modern English era. Defoe, maybe? Sterne?

We won't really know who the big name of the era is for at least a couple hundred years. The test of time is the ultimate signifier of artistic quality

No, that's just the test of time, not of artistic quality.

There is possibly a book out there that is the Moby Dick of our generation which only a small number of readers know of and which will in time come to be regarded as a masterpiece.

Yes, everyone knows English, mate. It's not like they have their own natural rhythm has developed independently.

Neither does your thing. You can communicate the same kind of shit at the end of the day regardless of language.
