People on /a/ are hyping this up big time and I was wondering what people on /lit/ think of Berserk, if anyone here has read it. Ive never read it but it seems like the genre is dark fantasy. So by fantasy standards, does it hold its own against the likes of lotr? If not, what about other heavy hitters in fantasy like The Wheel of Time? Or what of more modern dark fantasy like A Song of Ice and Fire? Does Berserk stand up to GRRM's work at all?

Please stop reading shitty epic fantasy works.

Cringe, sci fi and fantasy is good stuff

From what I've heard, it alternates between murderfest and deep reflections on the human condition. Sounds ASOIAF-esque

LoTR or GoT are poor analogues to Berserk. It's less about the world and more about Guts and his ensemble cast. If I had to think of a similar western novel I'd say Berserk is closer to Soldier in the Mist.

Quality of the arcs and art and tone varies wildly. Localization can be awful.

Well it's kind of a bad work, but the darker the fantasy the cooler, so it's cooler than LotR

I just wonder if the human condition reflections are actually memorable, or if they amount to not much more than what youd hear from an edgy 14 year old

berserks pretty great man
no need to compare
anything well cultivated will have gravitas

Honestly, Berserk is better.

They're very different and I'd argue incomparable.
LotR is largely about the world it is set in and the characters develop mostly through the circumstances of the plot rather than their own conscience.
Berserk is more character focused and has characters develop both through the events of the plot as well as their own realizations.
I worded this terribly but hopefully you get the point

Anything that's not Tolkiens poetic works, anon.

Both are equally good
Berserk has this somber, quite, but apocalyptic atmosphere.
But LoTR is more spacious and complex.

>> No.18290943

I thought Berserk had something really good going on with the Guts and Griffith relationship at first, but then Miura had to ruin it by introducing a w*man between them and that was the point it ceased as a work of art to me.

Berserk is the most /lit/ manga i have read and Guts and Griffith have more depth than most characters in most books.

Let the seethe begin.

honestly the golden age arc can easily muster up with the best. the rest is more hit and miss but that part of just a masterpiece from start to finish.

Found Golden Age overrated, with the constant monster-of-the-week esque villains and the superfluous characters, the only thing that's peak about it is the thematic depth.

"Yes"

>> No.18291113

Yes, one of the most highly revered manga's ever is in fact good and worth reading. No need for poor comparisons.
Berserk is powered by it's unmatched characters, Griffith is one of the best villains of all-time, classic greek tragedy figure, to say nothing of the depth of Guts' own hero's journey. It's got it's reputation for a reason, there's really nothing else quite like it.
