I read a lot of scientific/mathematical/economic literature and I agree. No one posts anything quantitative, they always post some vague qualitative bullshit. Which I read too, but no one cares or gives a fuck about the other side of the brain :(

Study enough philosophy, good philosophy, and you'll have plenty of questions and realizations about human existence that mere fiction can never teach. A lot of anons want to be the Next Big Writer, it seems, and philosophy definitely helps with that.

I don't think philosophy is without value, but the truth is the overwhelming majority of people who read or write it are just intellectual posers. It's just about finding more elaborate cerebral-sounding ways to spew banalities to try to impress people.

I don't think your average student of philosophy has gained any real insight into much of anything. Most of useful things philosophy has given society are wrapped up in other subjects now, or became other subjects after splitting off from philosophy. It provided the basis for most of our scientific advancements, it gave us some useful tools for debunking religion as a concept and discussing things like ethics in a more humanistic way, but most of those insights are so much apart of the cultural awareness now that they no longer have any kind of sense of profundity to learn about. Science has taken over a huge sphere of what was once philosophy ("natural philosophy") and what's left of it hasn't got much left to discover nowadays.

I've read a few books on philosophy (some more general texts and some Big Names) and beyond better understanding of what philosophy is and seeks to do as an area of study, I don't think it's added tremendous value of insight to my life. Some was quite interesting, in a sort of academic way, but that's about all the merit, it had in my book.
