Dogs of War and Bear Head by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Starts off as bleak and violent action with bio-engineered cybernetically enhanced animal super soldiers called bioforms committing war crimes for their master, who has them on a leash that forces them to be obedient, and then it does a 180 and goes deep on politics and ethics regarding artificial life in the second half. It's a wild ride, especially Bear Head which takes place decades after what happens in Dogs of War.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about the Books of Babel and how enrapturing they are since I caught up to them, so I'm going to post everything I didn't like in the hopes it'll cool me off enough to pay attention to something new.

First, Tom gets way too much shit, both from himself, which is an acceptable character flaw, and from others which is irrational. Like, when the Sphinx calls him a bad captain, what a load of bullshit. How many other captains could have escaped from the Ararat twice? Hell, within weeks of Edith taking over two of her crew members are shot in the head. Second, I was frustrated at Marya becoming a battered spouse. I get why it was necessary as a plot device, but it was still really consistently annoying to read. Which I guess leads into the third point, which is I feel like the author keeps veering away from what drew me into the first book: a man exploring a bizarre world searching for his wife. I do not give a shit about Marat and his schemes. The only thing I care about is Tom and Marya. Bancroft did a great job of making me love them and their marriage in the first book, and then the second in particular just forgot about how good it was. It did pick back up in the third, though, once Tom realized that Marya wasn't sincere in her telling him off, and the last half of that book was all around great.

>Master Assassins
>Kandri Hinjuman was never meant to be a soldier. His brother Mektu was never meant for this world. Rivals since childhood, they are drafted into a horrific war led by a madwoman-Prophet, and survive each day only by hiding their disbelief. Kandri is good at blending in, but Mektu is hopeless: impulsive, erratic-and certain that a demon is stalking him. Is this madness or a second sense?Either way, Kandri knows that Mektu's antics will land them both in early graves.

>But all bets are off when the brothers' simmering feud explodes into violence, and holy blood is spilled. Kandri and Mektu are taken for contract killers and must flee for their lives-to the one place where they can hope to disappear: the sprawling desert known as the Land that Eats Men. In this eerie wilderness, the terrain is as deadly as the monsters, ghouls, and traffickers in human flesh. Here the brothers find strange allies: an aging warlord, a desert nomad searching for her family, a lethal child-soldier still in her teens. They also find themselves in possession of a secret that could bring peace to the continent of Urrath. Or unthinkable carnage.

>On their heels are the Prophet's death squads. Ahead lie warring armies, sandstorms, evil spirits and the deeper evil of human greed. But hope beckons as well-if the "Master Assassins" can expose the lie that has made them the world's most wanted men.

Same humor as Iron Druid, but lacks the pacing.

I'm a huge fan of Kevin Hearne and devoured the Iron Druid Chronicles, so when I picked up Ink & Sigil, that's what I was expecting. The wit, the cynicism, the pacing of a modern tale of adventure. It wasn't, but let me explain.

Al is an interesting character, cursed with the ability to make anyone hate him if he speaks, and blessed with the ability to work a spell with ink. And when his apprentice shows up dead, he uncovers unsavory aspects of his life, which throws us into the main plot of the mystery, and Al working to find out the who behind the why.

Each component of the story was interesting enough, but I didn't find myself entirely smitten with it. In comparison to the Iron Druid books, I was left a little unimpressed, but this isn't to say it isn't a GOOD book. It's funny, quirky, has interesting characters with unique traits and flaws. Each character can stand on their own. But for me, something was missing.

I think the more accurate description was would be Soviet era SCI-FI as apparently the Strugatsky brothers had quite the time getting it past censors and published. One wonders if the 145 page novella began as a Tolstoy-esque behemoth and the rest wound up on the comrade editor’s floor.

This is a very novel approach to a first contact story. The title comes from the idea that alien artifacts that have been left behind in “zones” throughout the world were not deliberately left, but are rather the detritus of a brief galactic stop over on back water Terra on the way to somewhere else.

There are other ideas about the aliens and what they left behind and why. Told from the perspective of a “stalker” – a kind of prospector or poacher who enters the zones to collect the artifacts and sell them. It’s a dangerous job as the zones are radioactive or magical or something as illness, mutation and death stalk the alleyways and empty streets in an eerie prophesy of Chernobyl years after this was published.

SF fans will draw comparisons to Frederik Pohl’s 1977 novel Gateway because of the profitable but hazardous collection of alien relics. But whereas Pohl’s novel was hard SF, this had the Russian literature undercurrent of depression and morose introspection.

This was very influential and even contained a Vonnegut reference; a classic in the genre and a must read for fans.

One look at the "what the fuck even is that"-tier mutts they cast makes that clear. The Emond's Field natives being swarthy is perhaps defensible, since they're all meant to have dark hair and look little like Rand. Why'd they have to choose such ugly mutts for the role though? But Rand being monkey lipped is just wrong. He's supposed to be the son of a blonde aryan woman and a ginger arab-larping celtic man. Not an octoroon.

Lan as an asian is defensible. The borderlanders are described as wearing their hair in topknots, a traditionally japanese hairstyle.

I'm sure there must have been something in the books about them being slant-eyes, or anything to that effect
I've always imagined Lan as some kind of Mongolian/Asian

Was it really just their culture, clothing, horses??? that flipped a switch in my brain?
No actual detailed descriptions of Lan or his people as being Asian looking? I mean, beyond the black hair, which obviously allows for an Asian look, but isn't at all narrowing down details.

I know he is big and all, and Asians are twinks, but I just figured he was a special case.

These books contain fairly few hints at the race/ethnicity of characters, with some exceptions. The Aeil are described as pale skinned, tanned by the sun, with mostly bright red hair (some are more blonde).

Shienerans are described as dark haired with topknots, and their bathhouse culture is something straight out of a harem anime (the harem anime themes run strong in this series, what with Rand having three chicks.)

Emonds Fielders are described as having dark hair, contrasting with Rand. I think there might be a small number of references to Egwene having light skin, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

The Cairhienins I believe are dark haired with light skin. Moraine should exemplify this. I've always considered them kinda French, but I'm not sure.

The Andorans, unlike the people of the two rivers, are known for their blonde hair. Morgase and Elayne in particular exemplify this. These two characters are white with blonde hair, zero doubt.

The Seanchan are ethnically diverse. Their royal family is evidently black, Tuon is certainly a black bitch. But Egeanin has fair skin.

For the Illianers and Tairens, I'm not sure. I think they're meant to be swarthy like Italians.

what are some good really large fantasy series I can get lost in?
Even though the books aren't too long I like the idea of Chronicles of Narnia
I'm considering: Cosmere, Wheel of time. Mazalan, and Discworld even though I'd prefer something serious

What others exist?

The Second Apocalypse series by Bakker. Start with the Darkness that Comes Before.

Other ones include stuff like Realm of the Elderlings, Riftwar Cycle, The Dark Tower, ASOIF, First Law, and Black Company. Though some of those are of dubious quality.

More like, once the show-runners ran out of GRRM's book materials, with the plots, schemes and dialogues already codified, they had to invent on the fly season by season what was going to happen. The result is that characters didn't get killed off, lousy dialogue replaced decent lines, schemes made way for dialogue and all semblance of narrative drive was thrown out the window (like Bran). Result is a deeply unsatisfying ending that will stand the test of time on how not to end a franchise.
