And having an open mind to allow works from other mediums and cultures is the first crucial step towards that goal.
The parochial snobs who are gatekeeping /sffg/ reminds me of picrel. Except Bloom Himself would probably love anime and is intelligent enough to realize the importance of the social commentary and depth in shows like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online if he were openminded enough to watch it.

He uses a lot of obsolete words rather than made-up sci-fi words. I remember in one case he used a word for a guard, and I looked it up and it was a specific type of guard in a specific type of a country at a specific point in time. So like, don't feel too bad about not knowing all the words. You should have been able to figure out 'presentiment' in that context. I would have been stumped by 'barbican' and 'clarions' too though, I would have looked those up. You'll probably want to look up these types of words early on until you get the feel of the setting.

It feels very different when Murakami does it. Most Jap stuff I've read is very idealized in the descriptions of women and of sexuality in general. Murakami gets deeper into it, sexuality is more primal and more innately tied to the personality of his characters. The one I'm reading right now starts with a piece about how the secretary is chubby and beautiful, and how this paradox makes the mc feel, and how he rarely gets turned on so when women like this give him an erection he feels compelled to investigate them,etc. I get the impression that Murakami spends a lot of his free time really mulling over what it would be like to fuck women he notices

The only site I can find classifying it as YA is Goodreads. Wikipedia doesn't, no bookseller I've seen it listed on lists it under YA. They're just as snobby toward romances, mysteries, adventures, etc. Writing in a genre means conforming to its conventions to some degree in order to be recognized as part of that genre, and literary critics are nearly all totally uninterested in genre conventions, which are essentially just a heap of cliches and tired tropes. To a literary critic, being asked to appraise a genre fiction novel is like asking an appraiser of oil paintings what he thinks of a painting where half of the picture is clipped out images of other paintings.
