>DOES ANYONE ELSE LOVE DEAD WHITE MALE LITERATURE?
Literature is supposed to open up your mind to other world views and experiences. As a white guy myself I want to see the world without the tinted lens of white privilege with which I was born with. And having an open mind to allow works from other mediums and cultures is the first crucial step towards that goal.
The parochial snobs who are gatekeeping /sffg/ reminds me of picrel. Except Bloom Himself would probably love anime and is intelligent enough to realize the importance of the social commentary and depth in shows like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online if he were openminded enough to watch it.

Look, I'm tired of all this infighting. If bakkerfags don't want us in here that's fine with me. We'll make our own thread, just don't follow us in there and pretend like you didn't start this civil war.

So with that said can someone help me make an /asffg/ (/a/sffg) general template so we can discuss stuff like

xianxia
towerclimbing series like (SSS rank suicide hunter, etc)
isekai webnovels/light novels like Overwatch or Solo Leveling
litrpg

There's some really good untranslated series out there and I want to discuss them and perhaps find some japanese/korean/chinese native speakers here and start a translation project.

I think this is the best way forward for everyone. The /lit/ old-guard (old in the tooth guard more like) are too close-minded to even try sci-fi/fantasy outside of what they grew up with and the stuff recommended here is too difficult for me. I think we should just go our separate ways.

He uses a lot of obsolete words rather than made-up sci-fi words. I remember in one case he used a word for a guard, and I looked it up and it was a specific type of guard in a specific type of a country at a specific point in time. So like, don't feel too bad about not knowing all the words. You should have been able to figure out 'presentiment' in that context. I would have been stumped by 'barbican' and 'clarions' too though, I would have looked those up. You'll probably want to look up these types of words early on until you get the feel of the setting.

The novel was uncommonly successful for a self-published work, due in large part to notice gained during the 2016 SPFBO competition, praise on social media from author Mark Lawrence, and a positive review by Emily May, a popular reviewer on Goodreads. I mean how do you get a character that is simultaneously autistic, unaware of social conventions, and yet a smooth talking social engineer as charming as Locke Lamorra (yes I know the explanation for how this happens, but that's just the author's post-hoc justification for a shitty character)

It feels very different when Murakami does it. Most Jap stuff I've read is very idealized in the descriptions of women and of sexuality in general. Murakami gets deeper into it, sexuality is more primal and more innately tied to the personality of his characters. The one I'm reading right now starts with a piece about how the secretary is chubby and beautiful, and how this paradox makes the mc feel, and how he rarely gets turned on so when women like this give him an erection he feels compelled to investigate them, etc. I get the impression that Murakami spends a lot of his free time really mulling over what it would be like to fuck women he notices

I disliked liveship traders too. Just finish reading the Fitz trilogies. I skipped the rain wilds trilogy since liveship was such a letdown. It's not necessary plot wise to read the rain wilds trilogy, since they only become relevant for like 1 chapter in the last Fitz trilogy.

>Around young, beautiful, fat women, I am generally thrown into confusion. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because an image of their dietary habits naturally congeals in my mind. When I see a goodly sized woman, I have visions of her mopping up that last drop of cream sauce with bread, wolfing down that final sprig of watercress garnish from her plate. And once that happens, it’s like acid corroding metal: scenes of her eating spread through my head and I lose control.

The only site I can find classifying it as YA is Goodreads. Wikipedia doesn't, no bookseller I've seen it listed on lists it under YA. For contrast, stuff like Sarah J Maas' Throne of Glass is classified as Young Adult by both Wikipedia and most booksellers. So what I take away from this is that its classification as YA is something mainly done by readers and not by the publisher or booksellers.

Why do literary critics have an allergic reaction towards fantasy and sci fi?

>> No.18232940

>>18232771
It's not just fantasy and sci-fi in particular, it's all genre fiction. They're just as snobby toward romances, mysteries, adventures, etc. Writing in a genre means conforming to its conventions to some degree in order to be recognized as part of that genre, and literary critics are nearly all totally uninterested in genre conventions, which are essentially just a heap of cliches and tired tropes. To a literary critic, being asked to appraise a genre fiction novel is like asking an appraiser of oil paintings what he thinks of a painting where half of the picture is clipped out images of other paintings.
