And Showdown (Tocaia Grande) is one of the good books from Jorge Amado. His work is very inconsistent, but the highs are indeed high.
Not the best Brazilian writer by a mile, though. If you like it, try to get your hands on something from Graciliano Ramos: they both write about the same setting (the extremelly poor and wild-west-like Northeast of Brazil), but Ramos is technically and stylistically superior in every metric. Dry Lands (or something like it in English) is his most important book, but São Bernardo is my personal favorite.

I look forward to reading Show Down, I've already read Gabriela, clove and cinnamon which I thought was fantastic, loved that book, and am currently halfway through with Dona Flor and her two husbands, not as good but good enough (it's much more repetitive than Gabriela). I imagine Show Down will be something like Warlock by Oakley Hall.

And by the way, thanks for the tip, I'll check out Graciliano Ramos, first time I've heard of him

I guess I can't help you there, as I don't consider it to be either of those things. I hate modern vernacular and find a particular loftiness and splendor in the English of old. It's a pleasure to read for the same qualities of its substance as the KJV, Milton, Longfellow, or even Melville.

Graciliano is not very well known outside Brazil, but inside, he's one of the great masters (together with Machado de Assis and Guimarães Rosa). Jorge Amado got so widespread thanks to the "Latin American Boom" and maybe his friends in the Komintern, if you want to get conspiratorial. He's a great writer, nonetheless, but his books are way less polished than Graciliano's, and much of his work is pure propaganda for the Brazilian Communist Party — some successfully so, like Capitães da Areia (Sand Capitains in English, maybe), some, not so much.
Anyway, one book from Jorge Amado I read recently and would recommend is The Violent Land (Terras do sem-fim). It's a western in the jungle: two families are fighting for the control of the land perfect for the fast-expanding cocoa plantations around the city of Ilheus. Quite fun.

>> No.18227595

>>18227503
M'man! Much appreciated! I looked up Graciliano and found two books translated to english, Sao Bernardo and Barren Lives (I take it the latter is 'Dry Lands' as mentioned earlier?). Have ordered Sao Bernardo and I'm going to download Barren Lives (can't justify spending the equivalent of $25 for a book roughly 100 pages when I don't even know the author yet). Looking forward to giving him a chance now.

The Violent Land sounds interesting, sort of like a prequel to 'Gabriela, clove and cinnamon' where they're slowly moving away from the wild wild west to more progressive times, will definitely be reading that too, along with Captains of the sand (though this one feels, after reading the blurb, like a sob story).

Also just received 'Tereza Batista: home from the wars'. I'm really hoping it captures a similar feel as Gabriela did, that book was a pure delight. If you haven't read that one, do check it out!

Yes. I just checked.
São Bernardo is great. Is one of the most representative books about Brazil, imo.

>where they're slowly moving away from the wild wild west to more progressive times
Yes. He did it a lot. Tenda dos Milagres ("Miracle Tent" literally. I have no idea of how it's called in English) and Cocoa also deals with the cocoa industry in Ilheus (I haven't read them yet, though, so can't comment). Ilheus was his home town ,so it's understandable that he was very interested in it's history.
Captains of the Sand is a mandatory reading in Brazil. You can imagine my face when I 11 or 12 yo me read the scene in which one of the main kids gets horny and decide to rape a random girl in the street and she says "I am engaged! Please do it in the ass, otherwise my fiance will leave me when he finds out I'm not a virgin any more". It's not as sob as it seems.

Gabriela and Dona Flor were adapted to extremely successful Soap Operas. I haven't checked Gabriela, yet, actually, I'll move it up my stack.
I haven't heard anything about Teresa Batista, I hope it's good.

If you ever get really invested in northeastern Brazilian lit, Dead Fire, by José Lins do Rego, is quite good, as well. No idea if it was ever translated to English.

>> No.18228084

>São Bernardo is great.
Sure hope so, too late to cancel the order now.

>Tenda dos Milagres... and Cocoa...
Yeah, I've heard about those two and Tieta too, with all books named thus far being his most popular works. Don't think any others (or many more) are translated to english. And yeah, his love for Bahia and Ilheus and their people is quite obvious.

>Captains of the Sand is a mandatory reading in Brazil
I know. Kinda hot.

>Dead Fire, by José Lins do Rego
Sadly, I don't think it has been translated. Can't find it in stores, libgen or libraries. Shame, I did find a summary on eNotes and judging from the little I read it sounds interesting.

>I haven't checked Gabriela, yet, actually, I'll move it up my stack.
Do so, I'm sure you'll like it. It's like a continuation of 'Warlock' by Oakley Hall. Except in Brazil. I've downloaded the movie so that'll be my weekend kino. Sonia Braga. Nice.
