The past week or so I have been reading The Elric Saga and thinking about all the trad bands that were inspired by it got me disappointed and sort of pissed that no black metal band bothered with it, especially given the attention to Tolkien, so much so that I'm thinking of forming a band with the very purpose of giving the sound to the darker and more esoteric concepts of the Melnibone culture and series as a whole. How the fuck haven't people thought of it before, like imagine giving the voice to Stormbringer, it's precisely something up black metal's alley ffs!

Nope, not at all. Songs like Borrowed Time, The Golden Void and Veteran of the Psychic War, hell, even CF's Stormbringer captured Elric wonderfully, but never Stormbringer. Never his howling, never his malign personality and just how fucking evil and vile the blade and the entity are. Traditional heavy metal and European power metal can never give that voice to Stormbringer, but black metal can and already should have. Also, you can't really capture some of the more esoteric and bizarre concepts and features of the Melnibonean culture with a limited style of metal like that, you really need black metal and the endless abyss of possibilities it provides.

>I still don't want to read a cultivation story

Meanwhile in Bakker:
>The instinct to bigotry that had nearly killed him in Caraskand had quickly come to heel, to serve, compelling acquiescence, silencing critics, even murdering enemies. For years, he had grappled the great beast that was the Three Seas, pinned it to earth, and with gifts and brutalities he had trained it, until his name only need be uttered—until his tyranny had become indistinguishable from his being. This allowed him to move from nations to truths, to turn his intellect full upon the maddening abstracta of the Daimos, the Metagnosis, and the Thousandfold Thought.
>He had pierced the obscurantist veils, grasped the metaphysics of Creation, transformed meaning into miracles. He had walked the ways of Hell, returned bedecked in trophies. No one, not even the legendary Hero-Mage of ancient Ûmerau, Titirga, could rival his arcane might.
>Domination. Over lives and nations. Over history and ignorance. Over existence itself, down through the leaves of reality’s countless skins. No mortal had possessed such might. His was a power and potency that not even the Gods, who must ration themselves across all times, could hope to counter, short of scooping themselves hollow and forever dwelling as phantoms …
>No soul had so owned Circumstance. He, and he alone, was the Place, the point of maximal convergence. Nations hung from his whim. Reality grovelled before his song. The Outside itself railed against him.

If you know what you want you can either pare down your selection into a handful of really good titles, or you can join us in the camp of waiting for someone to just make another starship troopers.

I tried to read Starship Troopers, but dropped it before the end, despite it being a very thin book. It's extremely bland and poorly written. Cardboard characters, endless jerking off about how mathematically correct the morals are, bla bla bla, who gives a shit. I think the fanbase are mostly rightoids who don't don't read books and want someone to tell them what they believe. The book was so bad it put me off reading Heinlein completely.

It's not even that I disagree, it was just all very uninteresting. It's like those ancient Romans who wanked each other off about how virtuous their ancestors were, even though their ancestors were exactly as degenerate and retarded as they are, except in this case it's projected into the future, but that doesn't make it any less cringy.

I don't understand the praise for this book, it's incredibly tedious and empty.

I like Starship Troopers because the setting is basically pic related. That's unique as far as military scifi goes.
It's weird to me that this upsets you, but you might like The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress more since it has a lot more man vs man as a theme.

Except you are wrong. If this were true, the Roman Republic would have never prevailed during the 2nd Punic War after taking so many losses. They would never have become the dominant power of the Italian peninsula in the first place. Imperial-age "Romans" wouldn't have had the VIRTUS to have prevailed in the same situation.

After the 2nd Punic War, Rome goes into serious social decline, with the collapse of the rural Italian middle-class, and the aristocracy beginning to assume more plebeian traits in regards to commercial pursuits. This all leads into the troubles of the final century of the Republic, and by the Imperial period, you're really not even dealing with the same people anymore.

Not really. MS&T is an old school heroic fantasy plot with the callow youth who is the secret heir to the good king of old, wields a magic sword, slays dragons, rescues princess, befriends the elves, etc. But Shadowmarch is a lot darker and it's more of a mythological/theological mystery with a lot of influence from fairy tales. Ah yes, because I can't enjoy another medium without having a mental disorder? Right. You realize outside of your tiny bubble of western art, that anime is considered absolutely normal for adult educated humans to watch right? Adults read One Piece when commuting to work on the subway for instance. Anime is much more mature than your infantile western superhero cartoons or young adult stuff. Do you even know what Seinen is? There's sex and violence and tons of mature stuff in anime that I haven't seen in western scifi like Ender's Game. Works like Berserk and Monster is deeper than any of that bakkerfag shit. But go on, keep pushing this myth that your western stuff is somehow deeper and that we're 'schizos' for enjoying art from other cultures.

For the past year I have been playing loads of old dnd games (from Eye of the Beholder to more recently Neverwinter Nights) and I think the world building is fairly good,if a bit generic. I'm between books right now, so I'd like to read some 80s fantasy schlock to relax.

I slogged through the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy before I realized they're all the same. Each book is like its own self contained adventure and the character development doesn't really carry over, what little character there is anyway, there'll all canned DnD archetypes. Drizzt never grows out of his brooding 'i'm an oppressed good dark elf' self.

They are comfy though. I don't know of many party based adventures besides The Black Company and this was opposite of that in tone.

I find it funny you’d rather spend your limited existence reading stupid schlock about Mr Knight, or silly space operas about your sexual frustrations, than really breathe the air and live life, hiking, read Infinite Jest or another classic, learning an instrument, or playing chess with friends. You're about to enter the series' low point. There's still good moments in the books, in particular book 6 has one of my favorite moments in the entire series. But Perrin, Elayne, and Egwene all have real downer chapters that are hard to get through even on reread. I honestly skim a lot of Perrin's stuff on reread once it gets to book 8, same with Egwene and Elayne. My main beef with Elayne is she's just so unbelievably arrogant and never learns from her mistakes. Egwene is probably the most pretentious and full of herself character in the entire series and sadly that's not ever going to change, it's just going to get worse in ways you can't even imagine but, and this is a big spoiler at least she dies a fucking virgin unlike Rand.

Jesus christ you're all so embarassing. No wonder the rest of /lit/ bullied scifi/fantasy readers into containment threads. It's not difficult to ignore trannigger shitposters, reminder that replying to offtopic dramatic shitposters makes you part of the problem, just like this post makes me part of the problem as well.
Just talk about books ffs.

>> No.18228733

>>18228611
/lit/ didn't really bully anybody, sci-fi and fantasy discussion was common enough that people decided to just create a dedicated thread for it rather than having 2 or 3 threads created every week about different books. The threads have always existed primarily for the convenience of fans of these genres.

You also don't really know what's going on in these threads or what the root of the drama is so you should really just remain silent about it. Then again, your eagerness to opine on things you know nothing about is very common to /lit/ as a whole. /lit/ is also far more riddled with shitposters than /sffg/ is, or was, I should say. For the last 6 months the threads have been held hostage by shitposters, but alas /lit/ has basically no moderation.
