Any good novels about (or set during) Spanish Civil War? Preferably not straight up history books but something more with emotion, action and good characters. Fiction would be great as long as setting is there and it has some level of historical accuracy.

Homage to Catalonia is a good read but it isn't a novel. More autobiography with an explanation of the party politics involved on the Republic side.

There is a good story in Homage to Catalonia. He has to escape from the secret police, he is robbed, shot in the throat and has a good intro in Barcelona.

He does cover the infighting on the Republican side well, Antony Beevor even highlights Orwell during the infighting.
