It's said you can tell if a book has been read or not by its creased spine. But I've read a shit ton of books and only had this happen on probably less than 5 of them.

>> No.18205902

>>18205890
Wrong. It's the opposite. A creased back is a sign that you took extraordinarily long to read the book. Exceptions apply if you borrowed the book, you re-read it, etc.
My favorite books are the ones with the fewest creases because I simply couldn't put them down and read them so fast. As so often, the most common belief is also wrong.

Maybe if the owner is an animal. I take good care of the books I read.

Some simply don't take care of their things. I've been reading some books for almost 20 years and they are in good condition.

>> No.18205965

It takes bare minimum care to keep a book in good condition. You almost have to be try in order to beat up a book that badly. I don’t know how airport novels hold up, though. They may be different

If your paperbacks aren't falling apart, you only barely read them. If it's philosophy, you probably don't understand them.

I keep my books clean by expanding the spine before I read them so they open easy and don't crack.

I take meticulous care of my books because they are status symbols and reifications of the idea of knowledge, wisdom, and elitism. Thought I have indeed read them, their actual contents are much less important than the function they serve through my ownership of them. One must treat things as good as, if not better than, one treats people. If one compromises the physical integrity of a book, that book loses value (resale value and otherwise). Just like if one physically maims another human being, causing them to be permanently disfigured or disabled, that person loses value objectively. You wouldn't want to be seen with a cripple. Why would you want to be seen owning a shabby book?

I fold my books cover to cover when reading them so they literally all have a cracked spine

In fact I'm reading this one at the moment, and I havent folded it cover to cover because it's not convenient, and it's still cracked. I don't think I've ever managed to not crack a book's spine. It has nothing to do with reading speed as was suggested above.

And that's because the spine cracks the instant you open the book wide enough to have both pages layed in plain sight. If your spines aren't cracked, it means that you read your books with the text slanting inward to the binding which is a real pain in the ass, so props to you for putting up with it

The photo has creased spines because they're cheap, mass-marketed paperbacks. The more damage it gets on the first reading the shittier the quality is, up to pages falling out.
