It’s “damn” and they did that quite often in the Anglosphere before WWI I think. Whenever you read transcripts of speeches from back then you always see “d—n”, which was the equivalent of their “fuck” back then (or rather “f***)

Ya, but It didn't have jack to do with taxes, it was about the crown paying the governor rather than than the local legislatures. Taxes was just a propoganda complaint that common people could understand.

What a "swear word" is varies greatly throughout history. Up until relatively recently things of a scatological or urological nature were fine, and words like piss or shit were just common words to refer to bodily functions. At the time the comic was written, the big no-no words all involved religious stuff. "Zounds" is ultimately a contraction of "God's Wounds", for example. "Damn" refers to wishing God send someone to hell, "Jesus Christ" invokes, well, Jesus, so on and so forth. It's only with the increasing secularization of the Anglosphere that we've moved away from this.

Compare this with, for example, the Norse (and by association, all pre-Christian Germanic peoples), where simple biological functions were completely fine to talk about so you'd literally talk about pissing, shitting, and fucking in public with no problem because, hey, that's literally how to refer to these concepts. There's all sorts of references to shit and piss and fucking in the Eddas, for example (at one point Thor doesn't want to cross a river because he doesn't want to get his penis wet). Talking about religion was fine, but offending the Gods was a grave taboo (so badmouthing Thor was fine as long as he couldn't hear it, however the fuck that works). The gravest taboo of all was to insinuate a man was a homosexual or that a woman was a slut (and therefore unwomanly). Both accusations lead to duels to the death. Women could divorce their men for walking around with their shirts unbuttoned, and men could divorce their women for wearing trousers.

In Ancient Rome, the most heinous thing that you could call a woman was a "tribas", a horrid she-dyke monster with a tiny cunt and a massively distended clit. Tribades would stalk the land at night, looking for other women to assrape, as they could only get off by befouling other women. The interesting thing here isn't that the Romans thought that female sexuality was bad (like Germanics did, and really still do), but rather that a woman should only be sexual in specific ways (a woman being very receptive to others was fine, but a woman forcing herself upon others was looked down upon)
