I just realized that the point of religion is to give your biological offspring a behavioral mean to regress to to reduce the risks of living in your environment and attrition between like-minded peers.

If you recognise "religion" as a legitimate super-category to understand the world (it is not) and then take Christianity as your only reference point for how religion functions (you should not) then yes, that makes sense. In reality, things are a lot more complicated than that. People often worshipped the same gods but in very different ways. In the Roman empire, there were many legitimate and state-endorsed cults that existed simultaneously and were in competition with one another without being in conflict.
