I want to read more short stories and novellas, but I don't know a lot of them outside obvious figures. Any good pieces, authors, or collections anyone can recommend?

Short story collections are a good place to start, lots out there generally arranged by a common theme or by something the authors all have in common. Used market is filled with them and they are cheap. Great way to find new authors.

John Cheever and Raymond Carver are pretty great at times.

For short stories my favorite are Maupassant, Maugham, and Chekhov. In all three cases almost any collection you can find will be worth reading.

For novellas my favorites are The Captain's Daughter by Pushkin and The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe
